Edited by John Holmes AGnew, a Presbyterian clergyman, the Eclectic Museum promised to present to American readers an "extended view of the literature of Europe" by selecting its material from British reviews, magazines, and literary and scientific weekly papers and from the best continental publications. It contained articles on science, art, history, travel, and invention; and gave much information on life in Europe. Poetry, biography, news, and bibliographical notices were also included; illustration was provided by John Sartain's mezzotint portraits. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900
