This novel may have been ground-breaking and controversial when first published, but I was just terribly bored with the whole thing. I can appreciate how this reality of drug addiction contradicted with the popularly portrayed effects of drug use during this time (i.e. Reefer Madness). I don't think the novel stands up to the test of time, though. In several instances the writing style itself was irritating as some paragraphs and anecdotes were repeated in different chapters.
