Some additional engravings in the text in volume two. Some plates a little short on the margins in volume five. Occasional mild browning, mainly to the text in volume one. A LOVELY COPY IN A PRETTY PERIOD BINDING. Plates - after Hoet, Houbraken, Picart and others. Bibliography - Brunet V, p.150; Cohen-De Ricci 940. Scarce complete. SOMETIMES KNOWN AS THE SAURIN BIBLE AND RENOWN FOR THE SPLENDID PLATES OF MRS. HOET, HOUBRAKEN & B. PICART. The title describes this copy as PAPIER ROIAL. Bookplate of Friderici Reygeri. Bernard Picart (1673-1733), was a French Protestant who had taken refuge in The Hague, where his artistic skills were much in demand from publishers. Picart, Dutch master Gerard Hoet (1648-1733), and Hoets pupil Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) prepared these splendid engravings between the years 1705 and 1720 for publisher and bookseller Pieter de Hondt (1696-1764); they were offered for sale individually before being collected for these volumes and for de Hondts Dutch Bible. Captioned in English, German, Latin, French, Dutch, and Hebrew (Old Testament) or Greek (New Testament), the folio plates capture the most memorable events from the Scriptures, as promised by the title, rendering the scenes with grace and drama, and in meticulous detail.
