Leather. Condition: Good Only. None (illustrator). A scarce Scottish periodical containing essays, moral tales, poetry and a variety of miscellaneous pieces, adapted for instruction and amusement. Volume one only; containing number one, dated October 1818, through to number eight, dated May 1819. With the popular Scottish ballad "The Drunkard's Raggit Wean" pasted to the front pastedown. "The Drunkard's Raggit Wean" paints a pitiful picture of a child left hungry, cold and miserable through neglect by his drunken parents. This was clearly intended to provide moral instruction against the dangers of drinking alcohol to excess, and may have been linked to the Temperance Movement. Early ballads were dramatic or humorous narrative songs derived from folk culture that predated printing. Originally perpetuated by word of mouth, many ballads survive because they were recorded on broadsides. Rebound in a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, the spine is a trifle rubbed, and there are some marks to the boards. Gentle wear to extremities. Poem pasted to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Lacking the original first two and last eight leaves, which have been neatly handwritten and bound in. Instances of handling marks and the odd spot. Good Only. book.
