A French Grammar; WITH COPIOUS AND VARIED EXERCISES, AND QUESTIONNAIRES AMOUNTING TO UPWARDS OF ONE THOUSAND GRAMMATICAL QUESTIONS; THE WHOLE BASED ON THE WORKS OF THE MOST EMINENT FRENCH GRAMMARIANS BY W. CHAPMAN, SECOND FRENCH MASTER TO CHRIST'S HOSPITAL, THE CITY OF LONDON AND LONDON: J. B. BATEMAN, 1, IVY LANE, PATERNOSTER ROW. 1856. PREFACE. ENCOURAGED by the favourable reception given to my little book "EVERY-DAY FRENCH TALK," I now offer to all who are desirous of acquiring in a short time a correct grammatical knowledge of the French language, a concise Grammar, based on the works of the most eminent Grammarians and Professors of France, and illustrated with Examples taken from the best French Writers. At the end of each Chapter, under the name of QUESTIONNAIRE, I have introduced a series of grammatical questions on the rules given in that Chapter; and in the Syntax, for the purpose of encouraging French conversation, will be found "QUESTIONNAIRES SUR LES THÈMES," which will enable teacher and pupil to carry on a certain part of the lesson entirely in French. I may also add that if the pupil should afterwards, in continuing his studies, take up the Grammaire française of POITEVIN, GUÉRARD, JULLIEN, or NOËL and CHAPSAL, he will find that the knowledge which he has acquired from the careful study of this Grammar will be of material advantage to him, inasmuch as he will not have to unlearn anything that he has already learnt. 34, Grove Road, North Brixton, January, 1856.
