INTRODUCTORY NOTE.

THE following Memoir contains the positions of standard stars originally prepared for the reduction of meridian observations of right ascension made at the Observatory of Harvard College, to which purpose they have been applied since May, 1862. It was communicated by the author to the American Academy, September 9th, 1862.

The expense of publication in its present form, as a part of the Transactions of the Observatory, has been supplied from the income of a permanent fund given by Hon. William Sturgis of Boston, and held in trust by J. Ingersoll Bowditch and William Sturgis Hooper.
