THE LIFE OF MRS. SAVAGE: BY SIR JOHN BICKERTON WILLIAMS, KNT., LL.D., F.S.A., AND A MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY. a New Edition. LONDON: THE RELIGIOUS TRACT SOCIETY; Instituted 1799. DEPOSITORY, 56, PATERNOSTer row, and 65, ST. PAUL'S 1848. ADVERTISEMENT. IN the following Memoir nothing appears but what is authentic. Mrs. Savage left, in her own handwriting, a Diary of many volumes, commencing with the year 1686, and continued, with few intervals, to her death. Thence, chiefly, the narrative was compiled. All the extracts, unless otherwise mentioned, were from those books. The great number of her manuscripts, generally of superior excellence, rendered selection difficult. It was my aim, in the compilation, merely to introduce fair examples illustrative of each particular into which her character was divided. The Life now appears thoroughly revised, and with many enlargements. That the Divine blessing may still attend it, is my earnest prayer. THE HALL, WEM, JOHN BICKERTON WILLIAMS. May 3, 1848. |
