our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-one, Nathan Guilford, of the said District hath deposited in this office, the title of . book, the title of which is in the words following, to wit:

“The Western Spelling Book, being an improvement of the Ameri. can Spelling Book,by Noah Webster, Designed for the usa of common Schools. By Nathan Guilford.”

In the English language there are twenty-six letters, which are divided into vowels and consonants.

A vowel is a simple sound of itself.
The dowels are a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes w and y.

A consonant has no sound, except when united to a vowel.

The consonants are b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, P, 9 1, 8, , 0, 2, 2, and sometimes w, and y.
