Dieu eft fi bon qu'il me fait tous les jours du bien; de lui je tiens tout ce que j'ai; fans lui je ne puis rien; il fait tout ce que je fais & ce que je dis; & il voit au fond de mon cœur. Près de lui, les Rois font moins que rien. Ses mains ont fait tout ce que je vois de bon & de beau; en un mot, tout eft plein de fon faint nom. Ne fais point le mal, mais le bien; car qui fait bien, plait à Dieu; mais qui fait mal, ne craint pas Dieu, et a-grand tort. Tout nos pas vont vers la mort; mais, quand on vit bien, on ne la craint pas. There is only one God; he is the King of kings, and the Saint of faints. God is fo good that he loads me every day with kindnefs; from him I receive all; without him I can have nothing; he knows all that I do, and whatever I fay; his eyes fee to the bottom of my heart. Near him, Kings are lefs than nothing. His hands have made all I fee that is good and fine; in a word, all is full of bis baly name. Don't do what is bad, but do what is good; for whosoever does good, pleafes God; but whoever does bad, does not fear God, and acts very wrong. All our steps move towards death; but thofe who live welt are not afraid of it. The following Tranflations will be found not very smooth in fome places; but this the judicious reader will excufe, well knowing, that when two Lan guages are made to correfpond word for word, it is impoffible but one of them、 hould be a little stiff, or not quite literal. SECOND SECOND LESSON. In Italic Letters. Ne fais point de cas du mal que l'on dit de toi et fais de bon cœur tout ce que tu dois. Lorfque l'on fait que l'on eft bon, on ne l'eft pas long tems; mais, dès qu'on le dit, on ne l'eft plut de tout. Le jeu ne vaut rien; je plains ces gens que l'on voit par-tout, et tous les jours au jeu, ils font du jour la nuit, et de la nuit le jour. Quand on perd, on eft tout hors de foi; on fe fent le cœur tout en feu; on le voit à nos yeux; on ne fait plus ce que l'on eft, ni ce que l'on dit, ni ce que l'on fait ce font là les beaux fruits du jeu. 1 Do not mind what one may fay of thee; and do heartily whatever thou haft to do. A gift is worth two, when freely given; it is worth a hundred of them, when it is made heartily. When a man knows he is good, he does not remain long fo; if he declares it, he is fo no longer. Gaming is good for nothing; I pity those who are every day gaming; they turn day into night, and night into day.
