PROFESSOR'S LECTURES.

1. Write a note on the objection to the existence of Design in nature, founded on the alleged principle that the bodily structure is the "condition of existence," and no more.

2. How does Mr. Mill make use of this principle? Examine his reasoning.

3. How has Epicurus, under the form of a dilemma, stated the problem presented by the existence of evil? Mr. Mill accepts this statement of the problem.

4. How does Dr. Chalmers attempt to explain by natural causes the efficacy of prayer? Point out how this theory fails.

5. What are the unwarranted assumptions involved in Dr. Colenso's argument against the authenticity of the Book of Genesis, founded on the age of Judah ?

6. Write a brief note on the evidence for Christianity supplied by the existence and progress of the Christian Church.

7. State and answer the different aspects of Hume's argument against miracles.

8. Write a note on the Divine fore-knowledge of future contingents. 9. Examine the argument by which Mr. Matthew Arnold endeavours to overthrow the necessity of Dogma in religion.

10. What is Mr. Irving's heresy as to the human nature of Christ? Point out the erroneous assumptions on which this opinion rests, and answer it.

(The questions proposed for Bishop Foster's Prize, on this Paper, may be considered as proposed to all members of the Class.)

1. State the argument from Design, and quote authorities in support of its extreme value.

2. Define the different forms of Pantheism, and state how this system treats the question of personality.

3. Give some of the chief proofs afforded by Natural Religion for the Immortality of the Soul. How is this question decided by the Pantheist, and by the Positivist ?

4. Consider the question-" What language did Our Lord use in His discourses as preserved in the New Testament ?"

5. Trace the rise of the Mythical system of interpreting Scripture; and add the chief objections to which the application of that system is liable.

6. What are the principles of modern criticism as to the evidential value of Prophecy? Answer the objections founded on these assumptions.

7. What is Dr. Arnold's theory of Prophecy? To what error has the exclusive application of this theory led?

8. The relations which subsist between the Persons of the Trinity must be regarded in all cases as eternal relations. Show distinctly why this must be so.

9. Define the Monothelete heresy, and state its three phases. What truth relating to the death of Christ is denied by this heresy ?

10. What is the truth that underlies the principle of Sacrifice? What is S. Augustine's definition of Sacrifice?

The following questions are specially proposed to Candidates for Bishop Foster's Prize:

II. Write a note on Kant's criticism of the several arguments in support of Theism.

12. Give some account of the system of the Positivists.

13. Consider the arguments which would resolve Causation into mere succession. What is your own conclusion as to the principle of Causality?

14. How has Bishop O'Brien criticized Paley's introductory argument in proof of the probability of miracles?

15. Write a note on the use and abuse of the terms "Nature" and "Law" in modern controversy.

16. Give some account of Keim's work entitled "Jesus of Nazara.” 17. Criticize Renan's theory as to miracles. Point out the fallacious character of the so-called spiritualistic miracles.

18. Under what aspect has Sabellianism presented itself in ancient and in modern times? Write a short note on the sense in which the word "Person," as applied to the "Persons" of the Trinity, is to be understood.

19. Trace the formulation of the doctrine of the Church as to the "Hypostasis" of the SoN.

20. Define the heresy of Nestorius; and reply to the Nestorian theories of συναφεία and ἐνοίκησις. Trace the origin of the term θεοτόκος, and explain its true meaning.

COMPOSITION.

Write a Sermon, popularly applying the words :

"Whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother."

S. Mark, iii, 35.

In place of this subject, Candidates for Bishop Foster's Prize may write on the following :—

Show that, as contrasted with all apparent resemblances, whether Oriental or Hellenic, the Christian doctrine of the Incarnation is unique and original.

IV. Translate the following passages:

ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ κατοικεῖ πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς, καί ἐστε ἐν αὐτῷ πεπληρωμένοι· ὅς ἐστιν ἡ κεφαλὴ πάσης ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐξουσίας Give the substance of Dr. Lightfoot's note on the word πλήρωμα.

VI. (α). Write a note on the Churches in the Valley of the Lycus. How are these Churches referred to by S. Paul (quoting the passages), and elsewhere in the New Testament?

(6). Translate:

καὶ ὅταν ἀναγνωσθῇ παρ' ὑμῖν ἡ ἐπιστολὴ, ποιήσατε ἵνα καὶ ἐν τῇ Λαοδι κέων ἐκκλησίᾳ ἀναγνωσθῇ, καὶ τὴν ἐκ Λαοδικείας ἵνα καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀναγνῶτε, adding the substance of the discussion on this passage, as supplied by Bishop Ellicott and Canon Lightfoot.
