IN the study of a living language, the object chiefly in view is, to speak it, which to be accomplished, presupposes the acquirement of a' good pronunciation, of facility in reading, of grammatical propriety in writing, of a c0pious stock of words, but, above all, and what perhaps is attended with the greatest diflicnlty except in the country where the language is spoken, of a readiness of ear to catch the words and their meanings, when the language is uttered by a native With the usual rapidity of common discourse. Now reading and translation may be rendered particularly conducive to the attainment of these requisites, by pursuing a course similar to the following: in laying down which, the author wishes to be understood, not as dictating either to masters or learners, but as furnishing a few further hints of the plan and objects of his work.
