Class-Book of French Poetry for the Young.
By PAUL BARBIER,

One of the French Masters at the Manchester Grammar School.
One vol. small 8vo. cloth. Price 18.

In selecting these pieces of French Poetry for the use of Children between seven and twelve years of age, I have ever had in view the purity and simplicity of the language. Notes have been thought to be superfluous. Those using the book will notice how careful I have been not to sacrifice art for the purpose of suiting the class of children for whom the book is intended. Most of the pieces, whether narratives, fables, or subjective effusions, contain moral lessons inculcating in the learner principles of honesty, probity, truth, or gratitude towards God.

Recueil de Poésies pour les Jeunes Filles.
PAR MME. DE WITT

(née GUIZOT).

1 vol. small 8vo. 320 pages. Price 2s.

Graduated French Readers.

THE ELEMENTARY FRENCH READER.

A collection of short interesting and instructive stories for beginners, adapted for use in Middle-Class Schools, &c., with a complete French-English Vocabulary. Edited by ELPHEGE JANAU, French Master at Blackheath Proprietary School. New Edition. Price 8d.

At the request of several leading members of the Scholastic Profession, I have undertaken to compile an Elementary French Reader, suitable, on account of its price and contents, to Middle-Class and other Schools. The matter contained in this book will afford ample scope for the teacher to exercise his pupils in conversation and elementary translation, while the bold type chosen will make it more pleasant to read.

The Vocabulary gives every word in the text, the plural of nouns and adjectives (when formed otherwise than by the addition of s), and the feminine of all adjectives, thus avoiding the use of a dictionary. For purposes of reference, I have added a list of regular and irregular verbs. I trust this little volume will answer the purpose I had in view when compiling it, and meet with the approbation of Teachers.

will comprise the chefs-d'œuvre of AUGIER, BOUILLY, DELAVIGNE, DUMAS, VICTOR HUGO, LEBRUN, PONSARD, SAND, SANDEAU, SARDOU, SCRIBE, and DE VIGNY, carefully edited, and correctly and elegantly printed.

In no form can the French language, as now spoken, its spirit and idioms, be studied to greater advantage than in the masterpieces of the contemporary French Drama.

This fact almost every intelligent French teacher acknowledges.

The study of well-selected plays has the great advantage of bringing under the notice of the pupil a constant succession of well chosen idiomatic phrases.

The pupil cannot help retaining a great number of such phrases, and acquires thus the gift of French Conversation much more rapidly than by reading extracts or stories.

Each play is preceded by a short critical notice, and accompanied by such notes as are indispensable, and a careful rendering of the most difficult expressions.

Professors and Teachers may add such explanations as they consider desirable.
