in his faints, and to be admired in all them that believe (becaufe our teftimony among you was believed) in that day.

11 Wherefore alfo we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of bis calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:

12 That the name of our Lord Jefus Chrift may be glorified in you, and ye in hum, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jefus Chrift.

CHAP. II.

1 He willeth them to continue fleadfast in the truth received, 3 bewing that there Shall be a departure from the faith, 9 and a difcovery of Antichrift before the day of the Lord come.

NOW we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jefus Chrift, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not foon fhaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by fpirit, nor by word, nor by letter, as from us, as that the day of Chrift is at hand.

SqLet no man deceive you by any means: for that day fball not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of fin be revealed, the fon of perdition;

4 Who oppofeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; fo that he as God fitteth in the temple of God, fhewing himself that he is God.

5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you thefe things?

Idleness to be avoides.

14 Whereunto he called you by cur gofpel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jefus Chrift.

15 Therefore, brethren, fiand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epifile. 16 Now our Lord Jefus Chrift himfelf, and God, even our Father, which hath loyed us, and hath given as everlafting confolation and good hope through grace,

17 Comfort your hearts, and flablishi you in every good word and work. CHAP. III.

Paul craveth their prayers, 3 reftifieth bis confidence in them, 6 giver thes divers precepts, especially to foun idlenefs and ill company.

FINALLY, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free. courfe, and be glorified, even as it is with you :

2 And that we may be delivered from unreafonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

3 ¶ But the Lord is faithful,who fhall ftablish you, and keep you from evil.

And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you,

5 And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.

6 ¶ Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and 6 And now ye know what withhold-not after the tradition which he received eth that he might be revealed in his of us. time.

7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 8 And then shall that wicked be revealed, whom the Lord fhall confume with the fpirit of his mouth, and fhall de. ftroy with the brightnefs of his coming. 9 Even bim, whofe coming is after the working of Satan with all power and figns and lying wonders.

7 For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not our. felves disorderly among you`;

8 Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you :

9 Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an enfample unto you to follow us.

10 For even when we were with 10 And with all deceivableness of un-you, this we commanded you, that if righteoufnefs in them that perifh; because any would not work, neither should he they received not the love of the truth, cat. that they might be faved.

11 And for this caufe God fhall fend them ftrong delufion, that they should believe a lie:

12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleafure in unrighteoufness.

13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, becaufe God hath from the beginning chofen you to falvation through fanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

11 For we hear that there are fome which walk among you diforderly, working hot at all, but are bufy bodies.

12 Now them that are fuch we command, and exhort by our Lord Jefas Chrift, that with quietnefs they work, and eat their own bread.

13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

14 And if any man obey not our word by this epiftle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be alhamed.

THE FIRST EPISTLE

OF

PAUL THE APOSTLE TO TIMOTHY

СНАР. І.

1 Timothy is put in mind of the charge which was given unto him by Paul. 5 The end of the law. 11 Paul's calling to be an apofile.

PAUL an apostle of Jefus Chrift by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jefus Chrift, which is our hope,

2 Unto Timothy, my own fon in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jefus Chrift our Lord.

3 As 1 befought thee to abide ftill at Ephefus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mighteft charge fome that they teach no other doctrine,

4 Neither give heed to fables and endlefs genealogies, which minifter queftions, rather than godly edifying, which is in faith; fo do.

5¶Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good confcience, and of faith unfeigned. 6 From which fome having fwerved, have turned afide unto vain jangling;

7 Defiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;

9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and difobedient, for the ungodly and for finners, for unholy and profane. for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manflayers,

10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for men. ftealers, for liars, for perjured perfons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to found doctrine.

11 According to the glorious gofpel of the bleffed God, which was committed to my trust;

12 And I thank Chrift Jefus our Lord. who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the miniftry; 13 Who was before a blafphemer, and a perfecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, becaule I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

of all acceptation, that Chrift Jefus came into the world to fave finners, of whom I am chief.

16 Howbeit, for this caufe I obtained mercy, that in mafirft Jefus Chrift might flow forth all long suffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to lite everlafting.

17 Now unto the King eternal, immor. tal, invisible, the only wife God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

18 This charge I commit unto thee, fon Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mighteft war a good warfare,

19 Holding faith and a good conscience; which fome having put away, concerning faith have made thipwreck:

20 Of whom is Hymeneus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blafpheme. CHAP. II.

1

Prayers to be made for all men, and the reason why. 9 Howe women fhould be attired. 12 They are not permitted to teach.

1 EXHORT therefore, that, first of all, fupplications, prayers, interceffions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men ;

2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the fight of God our Saviour;

4 Who will have all men to be faved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Chrift Jefus :

6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be teftified in due time.

7 Whereunto I am ordained a preachJer, and an apoftle, (I fpeak the truth in Chrift, and lie not) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

9 In like manner alfo, that women 14 And the grace of our Lord was ex-adorn themfelves in modeft apparel, with ceeding abundant, with faith and love fhamefacednefs and fobriety; not with which is in Chrift Jefus. broidered hair,or gold, or pearls, or cott

15 This is a faithful faying, and worthy lly array;

918 Divers precepts to Timothy. I. TIMOTHY.

10 But (which becometh women profeffing godlinefs) with good works.

Let the woman learn in filence with all fubjection.

12 But I fuffer not a woman to teach, nor to ufurp authority over the man, but to be in filence.

13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the tranfgreffion.

15 Notwithstanding the fall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with fobriety. CHAP. III.

1 How bishops and deacons, and their wives, bould be qualified, 14 and to

what end Saint Paul wrote to Timotby of these things.

THIS is a true faying, If a man defire the office of a bishop, he defireth a good work.

2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, fober, of good behaviour, given to hofpitality, apt to teach;

8 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre, but patient; not a brawler, not covetous;

& One that ruleth well his own houfe, having his children in fubjection with all gravity;

5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own houfe, How hall he take care of the church of God?)

6 Not a novice, left being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; left he fall in to reproach and the fnare of the devil.

8 Likewife must the deacons be grave, not double tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre,

9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure confcience.

10 And let thefe also first be proved; then let them ufe the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

11 Even fo must their wives be grave, not flanderers, fober, faithful in all things. 12 Let the deacons be the husbands of One wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well, purchafe to themfelves a good degree, and great boldnefs in the faith which is in Chrift Jefus.

14 Thefe things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee thortly:

is But if I tarry long, that thou mayeft know how thou oughtest to behave thy felf in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

16 And without controversy great is the

Apoftacy foretold,

myftery of godlinefs; God was manifefta the flesh, juftified in the Spirit, feen of an gels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. CHAP. IV.

Paul foretelleth that in the latter times there ball be a departure from the faith. NOW the Spirit fpeaketh exprefsly that in the latter times fome fhall depart from the faith, giving heed to feducing fpirits, and doctrines of devils;

Speaking lies in hypocrify; having their confcience feared with a hot iron; 3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abftain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgivingof them which believe and know the truth.

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be receiv ed with thanksgiving:

5 For it is fanctified by the word of God and prayer.

6 If thou put the brethren in remerabrance of thefe things, thou fhalt be a good minifter of Jefus Chrift, nourifbed up in the words of faith, and of good doctrine, whereunto thou haft attained. 7 But refufe profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

8 For bodily exercife profiteth little: but godlinefs is profitable unto all things, having promife of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

9 This is a faithful faying and worthy of all acceptation.

10 For therefore we both labour, and fuffer reproach, because we truft in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, fpecially of thofe that believe.

11 Thefe things command and teach. 12 Let no man defpife thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in converfation, in charity, in fpirit, in faith, in purity.

15 Till I come give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophefy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

15 Meditate upon these things; give thy felt wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

16 Take heed unto thyfelf, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou that both fave thy self, and them that hear thee.

CHAP. V.

1 Rules to be observed in reproving. 3 Of widows. 17 Of elders. REBUKE not an elder, but entreat bim as a father; and the younger men as brethren;

2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as fifters, with all purity. 34 Honour

Of widows and elders.

Chap. vi. 3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.

But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God. 5 Now the that is a widow indeed, and defolate, trufteth in God, and continueth in fupplications and prayers night and day.

Duties of fervants. 919

23 Drink no longer water, but ufe a little wine for thy ftomach's fake, and thine often infirmities.

24 Some men's fins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and fome men they follow after.

25 Likewife alfo the good works of Some are manifelt beforehand; and they that are otherwife cannot be hid. CHAP. VI.

6 But the that liveth in pleasure is deadt while the liveth.

7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.

8 But if any provide not for his own, and fpecially for thofe of his own houfe, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

Servants' duties. 3 To avoid newfangled teachers. 6 The gain of godliness. LET as many fervants as are under the yoke count their own mafters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and bis doctrine be not blafphemed.

2 And they that have believing mafters, let them not defpife them, because they 9 Let not a widow be taken into the are brethren; but rather do them fernumber under threescore years old, hav-vice, because they are faithful and be

ing been the wife of one man,

10 Well reported of for good works; if the have brought up children, if the have lodged strangers, if the have washed the faints' feet, if the have relieved the afflicted, if he have diligently followed every good work.

11 But the younger widows refnfe: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Chrift, they will marry;

12 Having damnation because they have caft off their first faith.

15 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from houfe to houfe and not only idle, but tattlers alfo and bufy bodies, fpeaking things which they ought not.

I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the houfe, give none occafion to the adverfary to speak reproachfully.

15 For fome are already turned afide after Satan.

loved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.

3 ¶ If any man teach otherwise, and confent not to wholefome words, even the words of our Lord Jefus Christ,and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about queftions and ftrifes of words, whereof cometh envy, ftrife, railings, evil furmifings,

5 Perverfe difputings of men of corrupt minds, and deflitute of the truth, fuppofing that gain is godliness: from fuch withdraw thy felf.

6¶ But godlinefs with contentment is great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a fare, and into many foclith and hurtful Jufts, which drown men in deftruction and perdition.

16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it 10 For the love of money is the root of may relieve them that are widows indeed. all evil: which while fome coveted after, 17 Let the eldersthat rule well be count-they have erred from the faith, and pierced worthy of double honour, efpecially ed themselves through with many forrows. they who labour in the word and doctrine. 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these 18 For the fcripture faith, Thou shalt things; and follow after righteoufnefs, not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the godlinefs, faith, love, patience, meekness. corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

19 Against an elder receive not an accufation, but before two or three witnelles. 20 Them that fin rebuke before all, that others alfo may fear.

211 charge thee before God, and the Lord Jefus Chrift, and the elect angels, that thou obferve these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

22 Lay hands fuddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's fins keep thy felf pure.

12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art alfo called, and haft profeffed a good piofeflion before many witnelfes.

131 give thee charge in the fight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Chrift Jefus, who before Pontius Pilate witneffed a good confeflion;

14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jefus Christ :

15 Which in his times he shall fhew, who is the bleifed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

1 Paul's love to Timothy, and Timothy's of the Gentiles. faith. 8 Paul giveth divers exborta- 12 For the which cause I also fuffer tions. 15 Of Phygellus and Hermogenes.thefe things: nevertheless, I am not aPAUL, an apoftle of Jefus Chrift by thamed: for I know whom I have bethe will of God, according to the promife lieved, and am perfuaded that he is able of life which is in Chrift Jefus, to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved fon: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father, and Chrift Jefus our Lord.

3 I thank God, whom I ferve from my forefathers with pure confcience, that without ceafing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

Greatly defiring to fee thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy ;

5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt firft in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am perfuaded that in thee alfo.

6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou ftir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

7 For God hath not given us the fpirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a found mind.

8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prifoner but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gofpel according to the power of God;

9 Who hath faved us, and called us with au holy calling, not according to our works, but according, to his own purpofe and grace, which was given us in Chrift Jefus before the world be

gan;

19 Hold fast the form of found words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Chrift Jefus.

14 That good thing, which was com mitted unto thee keep, by the Holy Ghoft which dwelleth in us.

15 This thou kaowest, that all they which are in Afia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

16 The Lord give mercy unto the houfe of Onefiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not afhamed of my chain:

17 But when he was in Rome, he fought me out very diligently, and found me.

18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day and in how many things he miniftered unto me at Ephefus, thou knoweft very well.

THOU therefore, my fon, be firong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witneffes, the fame commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good foldier of Jesus Christ.
