NOTICE BY THE PUBLISHERS.

DR. AHN'S PRACTICAL AND EASY METHOD OF LEARNING LANGUAGES is acknowledged throughout Europe to be the most simple and ready of any yet introduced. So generally, indeed, is this felt to be the case, that the use of his name alone has been sufficient to secure a considerable sale in this country for several spurious works. The wrongful use made of his name in these cases was felt by Dr. Ahn to be not only injurious to his reputation and interests, but, from the inferior composition of the works in question, to be an absolute fraud upon the public; and, one of the parties offending having refused to withdraw the spurious works from circulation, a Suit was instituted in Chancery, for the purpose of compelling him to do so, and on the 18th July, 1860, the following Judgment was delivered by Vice-Chancellor Sir W. Page Wood:

AHN v. ALLMANN.

"That the Defendant be restrained from making use of the name of the Plaintiff Ahn in the title-page, or otherwise, of any book, or in the advertising or publishing of any book, in such a manner as to represent, or as to induce purchasers to believe, that the Book is the work of, or has been compiled under the superintendence of the said Plaintiff, except in cases where the Book has been translated or abridged from some work of the Plaintiff, not secured as to Copyrightbut this order is not to prevent the sale of the present stock of the Defendant, published before the filing of the present Bill, in which the words Ahn's System,' or Ahn's Method' shall have been introduced, together with the name of some other Author or Compiler."

PREFACE.

MANY French Reading books have been published of late years, and some of them certainly evince great taste and much care on the part of their authors; yet it would seem, that few of them are intended or adapted for the use of beginners, for nearly all those with which I am acquainted, appear, for this purpose, either too difficult, or too easy. Among the latter, must be classified all those "Readers" to which vocabularies are appended, containing the verb in every person, tense, or mood, that may occur. Whatever talent and labour may have been bestowed upon them, it is evident, that works of this description are little else than extracts from French. writers, together with the translations; and though they may prove a pleasant introduction to French literature at first, they fail entirely in their chief aim; for they do not enable the pupil to translate the easiest French authors, as soon as he is left to his own resources; and, what is worse, they develop the learner's memory at the expense of higher mental faculties. To this novel way of making translation easy, or rather difficult, I should greatly prefer the good old plan, still followed in the generality of "Readers," of offering little help beyond that of the Grammar and Dictionary. Grave objections, however, may likewise be raised against using Reading Books of this kind with pupils not advanced. They compel the learner to find out his expression or word among the many meanings given by dictionaries, a task which he will frequently be unable to accomplish, perhaps after a great loss of time; and they suppose, on the part of the student, a full acquaintance with the numerous anomalies of French verbs, a perfection to which most pupils cannot be expected to attain till the end of the first or second year of their studies, whilst it seems desirable that learners should begin to enjoy the
