THI HIS book is composed of the best parts of that section of La Harpe's Lycée, or Course of French Literature, which refers to French tragedy, as represented by Corneille and Racine. The object of the Editor is to supply the English student with a reading book explaining the beauties and defects of the plays which are generally read in schools and for examination, from the point of view of a French professor addressing an audience of French students. The following appreciation of La Harpe's criticisms, coming from a well-known authority, may serve to account for the Editor's choice : Dans son Cours de Littérature, en reprenant une à une les pièces de Racine, La Harpe développe d'heureuses ressources d'analyse, et il fait l'éducation de ses auditeurs. L'ancienne tragédie française (je dis ancienne, parce qu'elle n'existe plus) avait ses règles, ses artifices, ses convenances, que Racine surtout avait connus et portés à la perfection, et dont il était devenu l'exemple accompli. La Harpe les entendait et les sentait plus que personne, et il est le meilleur guide en effet, du moment qu'on veut entrer dans l'économie même et dans chaque partie de ce genre de composition pathétique et savante.-SAINTE-BEUVE, Causeries du Lundi.
