PREFACE.

To the question why another Manual of Family Prayer is added to the numerous Forms which have of late years been put forth, the compiler of the present little work has only this answer to make: that, as none of the existing Manuals exactly suited the requirements of his family, or exactly corresponded with his own idea of what the devotions of a household should be, he made the following arrangement for his own use some years ago, altering it

and adding to it as materials came in his way, and now publishes it in the hope that it may be serviceable to some who have felt the want which he himself experienced. His plan has been to give in the simplest way a definite thought for each Season and Festival of the year, as well as for each day of the week, (a plan also pursued in the excellent Manual which bears the signature of Lord Nelson); and this, without introducing isolated Collects from the Book of Common Prayer, a practice open, as he thinks, to grave objections. Should longer Lessons in addition to those provided in the Manual be required, the selection published lately under the title of "Legenda Domestica" will be found most appropriate. In this case the short Lessons might be used as Anthems. No Occa

sional Prayers for the various wants of a Family are added, as these will be found in many published Forms, and their introduction would have increased the size, without adding to the value, of the present volume. At the end of the Book a few blank pages will be found, upon which may be transcribed any special Prayers that are desired.
