PREFACE.

THIS little Manual has been drawn up for the use of Students preparing for the Oxford and Cambridge Local, and similar Examinations.

It contains the Text of the Prayer Book, with side notes explanatory of the language, and the composition of the different Prayers, Canticles, and Collects. The inclusion of the Text makes this part of the work complete, thus avoiding reference to the Prayer Book.

Facing the Text there will be found additional Notes, giving the source and history of the different parts, with fuller explanations where necessary.

The Introduction is mainly historical, sketching the history of the Prayer Book from the original sources to the present day. An Appendix is added, treating of the less important but essential particulars.

The present Manual consists of the Morning and Evening Prayers, and the Litany, forming the complete section as required by the Oxford Delegates and the Cambridge Syndics. The Catechism, with explanation, has been added in order to provide for the Syllabus of those Examinations which call for special attention to the Apostles' Creed and other subjects treated of in the Catechism.

The chief authorities consulted have been the works of Procter and Humphrey on the Prayer Book, Freeman's Principles of Divine Worship, Blunt's Annotated Book of Common Prayer, Hook's Ecclesiastical Dictionary, and Wakeman's History of the Church of England, of which due acknowledgment is made in necessary places.
