mitted in thought, word, or deed. Be merciful unto me for Jesus' sake, and deal not with me as I deserve; for then I must be lost for ever, for I can do no good thing myself. Therefore, Lord, I pray not only for pardon for the past, but for Thy Holy Spirit to lead me, and guide me, and keep me in the right way for the time to come. O Lord! I always need grace to help me; for I cannot go in the road that leads to heaven one step without it. Protect me and all my dear friends from every danger during the night; and all I ask is for the sake of Jesus. Amen.

FOURTEENTH MORNING.

"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him." (John iii. 36.)

ALMIGHTY GOD! my Creator and Preserver, to whose loving-kindness I owe all

the blessings I enjoy here, and to whose mercy alone I can look for eternal life hereafter, look upon me this morning, and fill my heart with gratitude to Thee for all Thy goodness to me; for having brought me safely through the night, and given me health and food, and many comforts which others have not. Give me

grace, O Lord, to use all Thou hast given me in Thy service; and, above all things, O Lord, give me true and saving faith in Jesus Christ, Thine own dear Son, so that when this life is over I may enter upon a life of happiness that will never end. I confess, O Lord, that I deserve Thine anger, on account of my sinful heart and wicked ways; but, Lord, forgive me, for the sake of Him who has died to put away the punishment I deserve. Deliver all who are near and dear to me from Thy wrath, and bring us all to heaven, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

FOURTEENTH EVENING.

"The Lord redeemeth the soul of His servants: and none of them that trust in Him shall be desolate." (Psalm xxxiv. 22.)

O LORD GOD ALMIGHTY! who hast been about my path during the day, be about my bed during the darkness of the night, to keep me from evil, and to give me peaceful rest. O Lord! make me heartily sorry for the sins I have this day committed by thought, word, or deed, and lead me in true repentance and faith to Him who has given His own life to redeem my soul from death and hell. Oh! give me such an entire trust in Him, as my Saviour and my Friend, that, however I may be off in this world, I shall never feel desolate or alone. O blossed Lord! whatever else I may be deprived of, give me this faith, for it is the gift of Thy Spirit. Bless all who are near and dear to me.

If there are any of

them who do not know the Saviour, O send Thy Spirit to lead them to Him; and if any of them are in sorrow, O teach them to trust in Thee!

Hear me, O God, for the Redeemer's sake. Amen.

FIFTEENTH MORNING.

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." (James i. 5.)

ALMIGHTY GOD! who knowest the secrets of all hearts, Thou knowest that I am sinful, weak, and ignorant. Have pity on me, I beseech Thee, and deal not with me as I deserve, but give me what I so much stand in need of heavenly wisdom, to show me the way by which I must go to obtain pardon here, and salvation hereafter. Oh! guide me, I beseech Thee, into the narrow path which leads to everlasting life, and give me grace to walk in it all my life. Teach me how to

perform all the duties of this day, how to withstand temptation, how to bear trials, and how to be useful to the souls and bodies of all within my reach. O Lord! give me this wisdom, I beseech Thee. Keep me from bodily harm this day. Bless all my dear friends, as well as myself, and bring us all to glory, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

FIFTEENTH EVENING.

"These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." (Revelation vii. 14.)

O THOU great and glorious God! who, though Thou art so great and glorious, canst behold all who dwell on this earth, however mean and humble they may be; look upon me, O Lord, with favour and compassion this evening. Deal not with me according to the way in which I have served Thee this day; for, O Lord, if Thou didst, I could expect no favour
