MUNICH.-Hotel Bellevue.

This hotel, supplying twice the comfort of some of the more pretentious houses, is situated on the Karl's Piatz, one of the most notable public grounds of this literal City of Art and Palaces; very central and convenient to the Residenz, the Pinacotheks and other art buildings, the railway-stations, post office, and other places so necessary to be readily reached by tourists. There are few pleasanter residences; as there are few more capable or courteous landlords than good Eng. lish-speaking host Munkert.

VENICE.-Hotel Victoria.

ITALY.

The only hotel in Venice, if report and appearance are both to be credited, built for that purpose and not shaped out of some old palace or other building. As a consequence, much more convenient within, than any other can be; and with the additional advantage of being within a few steps o

the Piazza of St. Marc, the Doge's Palace, the Molo, and all that interesting cluster of objects lying almost together, making the chief charm of Venice. It is capitally managed by Mr. Etzenberger, and worthy of the wide American patronage which it constantly receives.

REMINDERS FOR RAMBLERS.

All the hints here briefly given, have reference to official announcements made elsewhere in this volume, in the examination of which all particulars may be gathered; and nothing is permitted to have place there, or to be referred to here or elsewhere in the book, not bona fide within the knowledge of the author-proprietor, or the knowledge of which is not calculated to advance the interests of the traveller.

AMERICAN TRAVEL-ROUTES, ETC.

In connection with the "Skeleton Tours in America," a little preceding this article, there is no feature so notable as the great Californian Trip, by rail, by which such a wonderful space, involving the most picturesque, novel and interesting scenery, can be covered in so few days, and so much added to the previous stock of intelligence and experience— as witness the official announcement of the Union and Central Pacific Railroads, following, and the full particulars there given of the wonderful combinations and connections of the route, not only to San Francisco and the other Californian cities and places of interest, but the Colorado Mountain regions (the Switzerland of America), the great Mining sections, Salt Lake City, etc.; and, still beyond, to Japan, China and the East.

The Pennsylvania Central Railroad, now extending its various branches and divisions from New York to Philadelphia (New Jersey Railroad line), and thence to all the principal cities of the West, the Northwest, the South, and indeed in nearly all directions-is not only one of the most magnificent of all the railway enterprizes of the New World, but one of the best managed and most reliable; nobly illustrating the truth that railway-transit can always be better

and more safely managed in one large connection, than in small divisions with necessarily conflicting interests and want of proper concert.

Among the most notable of the lines of travel in America, at once for the excellence of its management, the extent of its accommodation, and the magnificent variety of the scenery through which it passes,-is the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, affording transit between Baltimore and Washington, and the Ohio River and all the cities of the Great West. From Harper's Ferry across the Allegheny Mountains to the Ohio, the road may be said to combine the very best features of American scenery; while all the modern improvements and luxuries of American travel are supplied by a management at once far-seeing, careful and liberal; and not to have ridden over the Baltimore and Ohio road, is to have missed what the tourist cannot spare from his experiences.

For travellers from the Old World, coming to see the wonders of the New, and equally for those natives and residents of the New World, who may be just commencing to explore the glories of their own land, Morford's ShortTrip Guide to America, published by Messrs. J. B. LIPPINCOTT & Co., Philadelphia, and W. H. SMITH & SON, 186 Strand, London, will be found not only convenient but absolutely indispensable.

NEW YORK INSURANCE COMPANIES.

The hints given in one of the earlier papers of this volume, as to the propriety of every traveller (and indeed every man), taking a reasonable Life Assurance, do not lose their force, year by year, but rather add new; meanwhile, the American system is the best in the world, as now admitted by the highest authorities of both continents; and in three especial companies hereinafter named, will be found the very highest types of extensive business, reliability, and usefulness. These three are the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, 144 and 146 Broadway; the Equitable

Life Assurance Society of the United States, No. 120 Broadway; and the New York Life Insurance Company, No. 346 Broadway; three institutions in the grouping of which lies an absolute matter of national pride as well as one of important knowledge to the intending investor in this most beneficial of securities. The steady prosperity shown by these companies during the last year of general financial difficulty, affords the strongest proof of their useful present and prosperous future; and the Mutual, especially, in the branch now nearly completed, on Chestnut street, Philadelphia, even additionally illustrates the great law of progress.

In intimate connection with the subject of Life Insurance, comes that of Accident Insurance, in which detail, too, America affords one of the noblest of examples, in the Travellers Insurance Company, of Hartford, Connecticut, with a virtual centre in New York, at 207 Broadway. The Travellers' has been for years doing a noble work, meeting with immense and deserved success, and annually paying out immense sums to the families of those killed by accident, or to the disabled themselves in their day of diminished receipts and possible need. The figures of business of the past year show something of the keenness with which the American public are waking to the need and the benefit of such an institution, so indispensable among a nation of travellers. This company affords also the ordinary Life Assurance in connec tion with the best advantages.

The Hanover Fire Insurance Company, office 120 Broadway, New York, continues to offer the best and most reliable guáranties against loss or damage by the devouring element. one of the most satisfactory of remembrances to those who leave property behind them when travelling; while a visit to the office of the company will show the best thing of its kind in the world, in appointments and management.

The Mercantile Trust Company, 122 and 124 Broadway, New York, supplies undoubted security, in the fire-proof vaults of the granite Equitable Building, for all valuables that either travellers or residents may wish to leave beyond the power of accident, fire, or the burglar.
