Olym. 1, 2, 3, &c. The olympiads. This æra

begins in the year of the world 3228; 776 years before the birth of Christ; and each olympiad contains four years. This mode of computation is used in the Grecian history.

A. U. C. Anno urbis conditæ, in the year

after the building of Rome. This epocha commences 753 years before the birth of Christ; and is generally used in the Roman hiftory. VARRO.

Anno Domini, in the year of cur Lord. The Chriftian æra, according to Archbishop Ufher, begins A. M. 4004.

Old Style: the method of computation used in England before the year 1752; when some errors in the calendar were corrected by act of parliament.

5 minutes, 7 feconds. Every circle is fuppofed to be divided into 360 parts, called degrees; each degree, into 60 other parts, called minutes; each minute, into 60 seconds; each fecond, into thirds, &c. The o at the top of the figure probably represents the circle, which is thus divided.

D. Denarius [quòd nummos denos æris va

lebat. VARRO, 1. iv.] The Roman denarius was a filver coin, equal to ten affes, or seven pence thrée farthings of English money. It is ufed in our law-books for a penny. Our tranflators render u. Snvapia, Luke x. 35, two pence, very improperly; as these words give us a false idea of the good Samaritan's generofity. There is the fame mifrepresentation, Mat. xviii. 28. xx. 2. xxii. 19. Mar. vi. 37. John vi. 7.

Ob. Obolus [from the Attic Coλos] a halfpenny. The obolus was the fixth part of the denarius; in English money, five farthings and one fixth.

Q. Quadrans,

Quadrans, a farthing. The Roman quadrans was the fourth part of the as, and equal to about three quarters of a farthing. Kodpavons is translated a farthing, Mat. v. 26. The as [derived from æs, brass] was the tenth part of the denarius, and equal to three farthings and one tenth, in English money.

From the Greek prepofition ava, of each, an equal quantity of several ingredients.

Libra, a pound, in apothecaries weight

is twelve ounces.

An ounce, or eight drams.

A drachm, or three fcruples. Drachm is commonly written and pronounced dram.

A fcruple, or twenty grains.

A grain. There are 5760 grains in a pound.

Pugillum, a pugil: that is, fuch a quantity of flowers, feeds, or the like, as may be taken up between
