CINCINNATI: PUBLISHED BY POE & HITCHCOCK, CORNER OF MAIN AND EIGHTH STREETS. R. P. THOMPSON, PRINTER. 1863. PREFACE TO THE AMERICAN EDITION. THE author has brought to the composition of this volume a taste, a culture, and an earnestness of purpose which have left their impress upon every chapter. No one can rise from the perusal of this work without feeling that the blessed volume of which it treats, is, "On every line, Marked with the seal of high Divinity; On every leaf, bedewed with drops of love And signature of God Almighty stamped, The religious public of Great Britain have attested their appreciation of its value in the successive editions of it that have been demanded. The English press has also bestowed upon it the highest encomiums. It now remains to be seen whether it shall have equal appreciation from the Christian public of America. 3 |
