A SERVICE TO BE USED AT SEA.

The service shall begin with the singing of a Hymn; after which all all kneel, and repeat the following Confession.

ALMIGHTY and most merciful God, our heavenly Father, we cast ourselves down before Thee, under a deep sense of our unworthiness and guilt. We have grievously sinned against Thee, in thought, in word, and in deed. We have come short of Thy glory. We have broken Thy commandments, and turned aside every one of us from the way of life; and in us there is no soundness nor health. Yet now, O most merciful Father, hear us when we call upon Thee with penitent hearts; and for the sake of Thy Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy upon us. Pardon our sins, and grant us Thy peace. Take away our guilt. Purify us, by the inspiration of Thy Holy Spirit, from all inward uncleanness; and make us able and willing to serve Thee in newness of life, to the glory of Thy holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then a Lesson, taken from the "Order of Scripture Readings for the Family," shall be read.

All standing up, shall now join in repeating the Apostles' Creed.

I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:

And in Jesus Christ His only begotten Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hades; the third day He rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

After which the following prayers shall be used.

ALMIGHTY GOD, Father of all mercies, we, Thine unworthy servants, do give Thee most humble and hearty thanks for all Thy goodness and loving-kindness to us, and to all men. We praise Thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all, for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech Thee, give us such due sense of all Thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we may show forth Thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives; by giving up ourselves to Thy service, and by walking before Thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with Thee and the

Holy Gnost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

A Morning Prayer.

O LORD, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day: defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings, being ordered by Thy governance, may be righteous in Thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

An Evening Prayer.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, be pleased to watch over us this night, and to spread the wings of Thy protection about us. Lighten our darkness, and by Thy great mercy deliver us from all perils and dangers, from every adverse working of the devil, from idle thoughts and wicked imaginations. Bring us, we beseech Thee, in safety to the morning hours, that thou mayest receive our praise at all times; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O MOST powerful Lord God, King of kings, and Lord of lords, who alone ordainest the powers that be; take under Thy most gracious government and guidance, we beseech Thee, Thy servants, the President of the United States, our Legislators and Judges, and all others in authority; and so enrich them with heavenly wisdom and grace, that they may attain Thine everlasting favor, and we lead

quiet and peaceable lives, in all godliness and ho nesty; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O ETERNAL Lord God, who alone spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea, and hast compressed the waters with bounds, until day and night come to an end: be pleased to receive into Thine Almighty and most gracious protection the persons of us Thy servants, and the ship [or fleet] in which we serve. Preserve us from the dangers of the deep, and from the violence of enemies; [that we may be a safeguard unto our country, and a security for such as do business in the mighty waters;] that in due season we may return to our homes with a thankful remembrance of our mercies; and that finally, having passed the sea of this troublous life, we may enter the haven of eternal rest, through Him, who is our only refuge and Saviour, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Here any other prayers may be introduced.

ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time, with one accord to make our common supplications unto Thee, and dost promise that where two or three are gathered together in Thy name, Thou wilt grant their requests; fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of Thy servants, as may be most expedient for them, granting us in this world knowledge of Thy truth, and in the world to come life everlast ing. Amen.

OUR Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
