INTRODUCTION.

HE author of the following volume has, for many

years, been accustomed to combine the study of Science with that of Scripture; and to contemplate the character of God that is shown forth in the works of nature, as well as that which is revealed in the volume of inspiration.

This system of study he has found both pleasant and profitable.

From the first, he was deeply impressed with the wisdom exhibited by the Creator in fitting together the various parts of the material universe, and in adapting, in every instance, the means employed to the end for which they were designed.

In studying the Work of Redemption, he did not at first discover the same harmony of counsel.

He had been accustomed to look at the labours and sufferings of the Saviour only as they had a reference to the children of men; and when he thought of the insignificance of man when compared to the mighty universe, of which he is a part, the question naturally arose, How could a work so great and so glorious as that which has been undertaken by the incarnate Son of God, have been wrought
