Numeral adjectives are those which ferve to indicate objects, either by determining or declaring their Number, as one, two, three, &c. or by affigning or diftinguifhing their Order and Rank, as the firft, the fecond, &c. for which reafon, they are divided into Cardinal and Ordinal Numbers; * viz.
*The word Cardinal signifies chief or príncipal, and is given to the first kind of Numeral Adjectives, because they are the root from which thofe that are called the Ord nul Numbers are derived. It must be obferved, that the first confonant of cing, fix, fept, huit, neuf, and dix, are articulated at the end of a phrafe, and before a word beginning with a vowel; and that the three compound numbers dix-fept, &c. are also pronounced dif-set, dif-uit, dif-neuf.
Obferve that though the t of Vingt be articulated in vingt-et un, vingt-deux, &c. as far as Trente, yet it must not be founded in Quatre-vingt-un, quatre-vingi-onze, nor in any of the other compound numbers, wherein the gt is not uttered. We never fay in French cent-et-un, nor cent-et-deux, cent-et-trois, &c, neither deaxcents et un, two hundred and one; deux cents deux, &c. as in English; but cent, un, cent-deux, and cent-huit, and cent-onze, &c. without pronouncing the t.
**Learners are to obferve-1ft, That the Cardinal Numbers un, vingt, cent, and million, are fufceptible of the following additions; viz. Un makes une, either before or relating to a Subftantive of the feminine Gender: as un Garçon, one Boy; une Fille, one Girl; j'en vois un or une, I fee one of them &c. Vingt makes vingts, when annexed to quatre or fix before a Subftantive only; as Quatre-vingts garçons, and Six vingts hommes, but in no other inftance; for we always write Quatrevingt-deux garçons, &c. Both Cent and Million require an s, when used to denote more than one; as deux cents, two hundred, &c. deux millions, two millions, &c.-2dly, That the Pericle et or & is ufed before the unit, as far as Quatre-vingt (ighty) as in vingt-et-un, trente-et-un. quarante-et-un, &c. but not before the other numbers: and after Quatre vingt, the conjunctive particle et is not ufed before the Unit.
*The vowel is not dropt in le before huit and huitième, nor before onzę and onzième; write le huit, le huitiême; and le onze, le onzième.
