FIRST LESSONS IN ENGLISH AND TAMUL: DESIGNED TO ASSIST TAMUL YOUTH IN THE Part I. PUBLISHED BY THE JAFFNA BOOK SOCIETY. PRESS OF THE AMERICAN MISSION, MANEPY. 1837. REMARKS. It may be thought that the Prepositions, Pronouns, and Irregular verbs in this little book savour too much of Grammar for first lessons in English; but as these are the a, b, c, both of writing and speaking the language, it is believed, that the youth cannot commence learning them too early, nor commit them too thoroughly. Experience proves, that, if the irregular verbs are not thoroughly committed while young, their use in after life is never easy and accurate. The plan of the book is simple. Every word used is defined in Tamul, and, with few exceptions, never defined but once, so that the learner is obliged to remember what he has been over. On this account the Tamul is given in the general form, and not adapted to the adverbial nor to the adjective form. |
