This elementary work, in which the principal rules of both languages are
fully compared with each other, will be useful to those who
having a knowledge of the English language, are

desirous of becoming acquainted with the

principles of the French language;

BE IT REMEMBERED, That on the second day of December, in the forty-seventh year of the Independence of the United States of America, A. D. 1822, M. A. TEXIER DE LA POMMERAYE of the said District, hath deposited in this office the Title of a Book, the right whereof he claims as author in the words following, to wit:

Abridgment of a French and English Grammar, by M. A. TEXIER DE LA POMMERAYE, late Commander in Chief of the Staf of a Livision (Corps d'armée) of the French army. "This elementary work, in which the principal rules of both languages are fully compared with each other, will be useful to those, who having a knowledge of the English language, are desirous of becoming acquainted with the principles of the French language; by the same author. First edition.

In Conformity to the Act of the Congress of the United States, inti. tuled, "An Act for the Encouragement of Learning, by securing the Copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the Authors and Proprietors of such Copies, during the Times therein mentioned."-And also to the Act, entitled, "An Act supplementary to An Act, entitled, "An Act for the Encouragement of Learning, by securing the Copies of Maps, Charts, and Books, to the Authors and Proprietors of such Copies during the Times therein mentioned," and extending the Benefits thereof to the Arts of designing, engraving, and etching historical and other Prints."

NOTICE.

Ir is by the advice of many gentlemen of Philadelphia, whose judgment I highly value, that I have been induced to publish this abridgment of the larger treatise on grammar already announced, and which I expect will appear early in April next. I seize with eagerness the opportunity of dedicating this elementary work to the youth of Philadelphia. Should it also meet the approbation of their parents, I shall feel myself amply recompensed for the care and labour of its preparation.

The title of the work precludes the necessity of a preface. It will be sufficient therefore to remark, that in collecting the proper materials for the study of the French language, I have carefully avoided prolixity, and that in my researches I have always consulted the dictionary of the French academy and the best authors.
