CHOICE READINGS

FROM FRENCH HISTORY.

Edited, with Notes, Indices, Glossary, &c.

BY GUSTAVE MASSON.

Complete in 3 vols. small 8vo, cloth. Price 2s. 6d. each.

THIS Third Volume completes the Series of "Choice Readings from French History," and brings the student down to the battle of Waterloo and the Fall of the First Empire. I have endeavoured here, as well as in the previous instalments of my work, to avoid uniformity, and to substitute less known pieces instead of the hackneyed extracts which fill the pages of most Recueils Choisis. The numerous descriptions of battles, and the quotations from Barras, Roederer, Baron Bignon, and Lacretelle, will, I trust, be found useful by candidates for the Army and the Diplomatic Service Examinations.

The space reserved in the first two volumes for the glossary being available on this occasion, I have given more development to the notes and indices; they contain all the elucidation required towards a complete understanding of the events and characters described or referred to in the text. GUSTAVE MASSON.

Part I.—FROM RONCEVAUX TO MONTLHÉRY (778--1465). 1 vol. small 8vo, with a Map. Cloth, 2s. 6d.

Part II.-FROM PAVIA TO THE DEATH OF HENRY IV.

(1525-1610).

1 vol. small 8vo, 224 pages, cloth, 2s. 6d.

Part III. FROM THE ACCESSION OF LOUIS XIII.
TO THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO.

1 vol. small 8vo, 256 pages, with 2 maps. Cloth, 2s. 6d.

"The selections are made very judiciously, and for the most part from the best extant."-Saturday Review.

"We have seldom seen a book of which, in its class, we approve so highly."-Literary Churchman.

"The notes are full, and the glossary is a treasure of old French. The map shows the state of the country at the accession of the Valois. Altogether the hook is one of the best we ever saw of the kind."-Graphic.

"Illustrates medieval literature in a very interesting way."Daily Chronicle.

"We trust that the volume may encourage all who can read French to turn to this interesting guide, and be by it led back to the rich stores of ancient literature on which the less valuable light literature of modern France has unfortunately fallen so thickly as to have almost obscured it from our sight."-Public Opinion.

Short Stories

FROM

Modern French Writers.

SELECTED AS SUBJECTS OF FRENCH CONVERSATION.

Edited, with Questions on Grammar, History, Geography, and General Notes, by a group of Professors (Members de la Société Nationale des Professeurs de Français en Angleterre), under the direction of

JULES

BUE,

Honorary M.A. of Oxford, Taylorian French Teacher.

1 vol. small 8vo. Cloth, 2s. 6d.

The object which the editors of this book had in view was to furnish masters and pupils with the means of solving a question which had been urged so many times before-whether it would not be possible to make the pupils enter into conversation in French with their masters in class. Many competent judges have answered in the affirmative, and many professors who have followed the plan traced in this book have been entirely successful.

The accompanying questions on the subject of the pieces chosen to be read and translated in class, are made in order to furnish the students with a means of showing that they thoroughly understood what they read, took an interest in it, and would leave nothing unknown of any part that was worth knowing. They are offered as examples for innumerable other questions which can be asked and answered with perfect ease by masters and pupils, after very little practice.

Compiled and Edited by

W. T. JEFFCOTT, (Univ. Lond.)

Vice-Principal of the High School, Margate.

AND

GEO. J. TOSSELL, (Univ. Lond.)

Modern Language Master in the High School, Margate. "This work satisfies a great need, and seems destined to be a valuable adjunct to the practical teaching of the French Language."-Public Opinion. "We have on several occasions pointed out the advantages to be derived by young pupils from the study of newspaper accounts of current events, and are pleased to see the idea well carried out in this French book. The extracts, which have been selected from 20 newspapers, take a wide range, and furnish the basis for an excellent series of questions. Throughout, the book is made as instructive as possible, and it will prove of great service to all who are studying the language."-Daily Chronicle.

The Philology of the French Language,

THIRD AND ENTIRELY REVISED EDITION.

By Dr. A. L. MEISSNER,

Librarian and Professor of Modern Languages,
Queen's College, Belfast;
Examiner in the University of Ireland.

1 vol., 8vo. cloth. Price 3s. 6d.

A new edition of the Philology of the French Language having been called for, the Author has taken the opportunity of thoroughly revising and remodelling the work in accordance with the present advanced state of the science of comparative grammar. Several important additions have been made, especially respecting the Keltic and Italian elements in the French language, and in the chapter on Phonology. In his revision the author has been greatly assisted by the careful and appreciative review of a former edition by Prof. Gaston Paris, whose suggestions have received all the attention due to the highest living authority on the subject. The hints given by M. Henri Gaidoz, Editor of the Revue Celtique, have been utilised, and the lacuna, pointed out by Prof. Bernhard Schmitz in his Cyclopædia of Modern Philology, have been filled up, so as to make the book the most complete manual of French Philology as yet published.
