In Thy might all things I bear,
In Thy love find bitters sweet,
And with all my grief and care
Sit in patience at Thy feet.

Let Thy mercy's wings be spread O'er me, keep me close to Thee In the peace Thy love doth shed, Let me dwell eternally.

Be my all; in all I do

Let me only seek Thy will, Where the heart to Thee is true,

All is peaceful, calm, and still.

XXXIII.

CARE FOR THE THINGS OF THIS LIFE.

22-31.

SAY unto you, Take no thought for your Luke xii.
life, what
ye shall eat; neither for the body,

[blocks in formation]

The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.

Consider the ravens for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?

And which of you, with taking thought, can add to his stature one cubit?

If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?

Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

If then God so clothe the grass, which is to-day in the field, and to-morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

Luke xii. 16-21.

And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

For all these things do the nations of the world

:

seek after and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you.

Parable of the Rich Man.

He spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much

goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

Does each day upon the wing
Its allotted burden bring?
Load it not besides with sorrow
Which belongeth to the morrow.
Strength is promised, strength is given,
When the heart by God is riven;
But foredate the hour of woe,
And alone thou bear'st the blow.
One thing only claims thy care,—
Seek thou first, by faith and prayer, •
That all-glorious world above,
Home of righteousness and love,
And whate'er thou need'st below,

He thou trustest will bestow.

POVERTY.

E have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good.

Blessed be ye poor: for your's is the

kingdom of God.

To the poor the gospel is preached.

ILLUSTRATIVE INCIDENT.

And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

Though lowly here may be our lot

High work we have to do,

In faith and trust to follow him
Whose lot was lowly too.

Our days of darkness we may bear,
Strong in a Father's love,
