וַיְבַקְשׁוּ אֶת־נַפְשִׁי לְקַחְתָּהּ: וַיֹּאמֶר צֵא וְעָמַדְתָּ בָהָר לִפְנֵי יְהוָה וְהִנֵּה יְהוָה עֹבֵר וְרוּחַ גְּדוֹלָה וְחָזק מפרק הָרִים וּמְשַׁבֵּר סְלָעִים לִפְנֵי יְהוָה לֹא בָרְוּחַ יְהוָה וְאַחַר הָרוּחַ רַעַשׁ לֹא בָרַעַשׁ יְהוָה: וְאַחַר הָרַעַשׁ אֵשׁ לֹא בָאֵשׁ יְהוָה וְאַחַר הָאֵשׁ קוֹל דְּמָמָה דַמָּה: וַיְהִי כִּשְׁמֹעַ אֵלִיָּהוּ וַיִּלֶט פָּנָיו בְּאַדַּרְתּוֹ וַיֵּצֵא וַיַּעֲמֹד פֶּתַח הַמְעָרָה וְהִנֵּה אֵלָיו קול וַיֹּאמֶר מַה־לְךְ פָּה אֵלִיָּהוּ: וַיֹּאמֶר קָנֹא קִנֵּאתִי לַיהוָה אֱלֹהֵי צְבָאוֹת כִּי־עָזְבוּ בְרִיתְךָ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת־ מִזְבְּחֹתֶיךָ הָרָסוּ וְאֶת־נְבִיאֶיךָ הָרְגוּ בֶחָרֶב וָאִוָּתֵר אֲנִי לְבַדִּי וַיְבַקְשׁוּ אֶת־־נַפְשִׁי לְקַחְתָּהּ: וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֵלָיו לֶךְ שׁוּב לְדַרְכְּךָ מִדְבַּרָה דַמָּשֶׂק וּבָאתָ וּמָשַׁחְתָּ אֵתי חֲזָאֵל לְמֶלֶךְ עַל־אֲרָם: וְאֵת יֵהוּא בֶן־נִמְשִׁי, תִּמְשַׁח לְמֶלֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאֶת־אֱלִישָׁע בֶּן־שָׁפָט מֵאָבֵל מְחוֹלָה תִּמְשח לְנָבִיא תַּחְתֶּיךָ: וְהָיָה הַנִּמְלָט מֵחֶרֶב חֲזָאֵל יָמִית יְהוּא וְהַנִּמְלָט מֵחֶרֶב יֵהוּא יָמִית אֶלִישָׁע : וְהִשְׁאַרְתִּי בְיִשְׂרָאֵל שִׁבְעַת אֲלָפִים כָּל־הַבִּרְכַּיִם אֲשֶׁר לֹא־־כָרְעוּ לַבַּעַל וְכָל־הַפֶּה אֲשֶׁר לֹא־־נָשַׁק לָוֹ: וַיֵּלֶךְ מִשָּׁם וַיִּמְצָא אֶת־אֱלִישָׁע בֶּן־־שָׁפָט וְהִוּא חֹרֵשׁ שְׁנֵים־ עשָׂר צְמָדִים לְפָנָיו וְהוּא בִּשְׁנֵים הֶעָשָׂר וַיַּעֲבָר אֵלִיָּהוּ אֵלָיו וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ אַדַּרְתּוֹ אֵלָיו: וַיַּעֲזֹב אֶת־הַבָּקָר וַיָּרָץ אַחֲרֵי אֵלִיָּהוּ וַיֹּאמֶר אֶשְׁקָה־נָא לְאָבִי וּלְאִמִּי וְאֵלְכָה אַחֲרִיךְ וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ לֵךְ שׁוּב כִּי מֶה־־עָשִׂיתִי לָךְ: וַיָּשָׁב מֵאַחֲרָיו וַיַּקַח אֶת־צֶמֶד הַבָּקָר וַיִּזְבָּחֵהוּוּבִכְלִיהַבָּקָר בִּשְׁלָם הַבָּשָׂר וַיִּתֵּן לָעָם וַיֹּאכֵלוּ וַיָּקָם וַיֵּלֶךְ אַחֲרֵי אֵלִיָּהוּ וַיְשָׁרְתֵהוּ :

וכשיהיו מטות ומסעי מחוברים קורין דברי ירמיה בפרשת פינחס וקורין

שמעו דבר יי במטות ומסעי :

דִּבְרֵי יִרְמְיָהוּ בֶּן־חִלְקִיָּהוּ מִן־הַכֹּהֲנִים אֲשֶׁר בַּעֲנָתוֹת

בְּאֶרֶץ בִּנְיָמִן: אֲשֶׁר הָיָה דְבַר־יְהוָה אֵלָיו בִּימֵי

the righteousness of the Lord. Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves of a year old ? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? he hath shewed thee, O man, what is good : and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.

girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel. And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal, how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, so let the gods do to me, and more also, if I'make not thy life as the life of one of them by to-morrow about this time. And when he saw that he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper-tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, it is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life: for I am not better than my fathers. And as he lay and slept under a juniper-tree, behold then, an angel touched him, and said unto him, arise, and eat. And he looked, and behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, arise, and eat : because the journey is too great for theę. And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights, unto Horeb the mount of God. And he came thither unto a cave and lodged there. And behold, the word of the Lord came to him; and he said unto him, what doest thou here, Elijah ? and he said, I have been very jealous. for the Lord God of hosts : for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek

צִדְקוֹת יְהוָה: בַּמָה אֲקָדֶם יְהוָה אִכַּף לֵאלֹהֵי מָרוֹם הַאֲקֵדְמָנוּ בְּעולות בַּעֲנָלִים בְּנֵי שָׁנָה: הֲיִרְצֶה יְהוָה בְּאַלְפִי אֵילִים בְּרַבְבוֹת נַחֲלֵי־שֶׁמֶן הַאֶתֵּן בְּכוֹרִי פִשְׁעֵי פְּרִי בִטְנִי חַטָּאת נַפְשִׁי: הִגִּיד לְךְ אָרֶס מַה־־טוֹב וּמָה יְהוָה דּוֹרֶש מִמָּךְ כִּי אִם־עֲשׂוֹת מִשְׁפָּט וְאַהֲבַת חֶסֶר

fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, then shall it be that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord's, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering. So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord delivered them into his hands. And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou cometh to Minneth, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

many people, as a dew from the Lord; as the showers upon the grass, that tærrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men. Thine hand shall be lifted up upon thine adversaries, and all thine enemies shall be cut off. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee; and I will destroy thy chariots: and I will cut off the cities of thy land, and throw down all thy strong holds and I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers. Thy, graven images also will. I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thişe hands; and I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee; so 'will I destroy thy cities. And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen, such as they have not heard. Hear ye now what the Lord saith, arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice. Hear ye, 0 mountains, the Lord's controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth; for the Lord hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel. O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me. For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants: and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim, unto Gilgal; that ye may know

אִם־נָתוֹן, תִּתֵּן אֶת־בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן בְּיָדִי: וְהָיָתָ הַיּוֹצֵא אֲשֶׁר

א מְדַלְתֵי בֵיתִי לִקְרָאתִי בְּשׁוּבִי בְשָׁלוֹם מִבְּנֵי עַמְון וְהָיָה לַיהוָה וְהַעֲלִיתִיהוּ עוֹלֶה; וַעֲבַר יִפְתָּח אֶל־ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן לְהִלָּחֶם בָּם וַיִתְּנֵם יְהוָה בְּיָדְוֹ: וַיִּכֶם מֵערער וְעַד־בּוֹאֲךָ מִבֵּית עֶשְׂרִים עִיר וְעַר אָבֵל כְּרָמִים מַכָּה גְדוֹלָה מְאֹד וַיִּכָּנְעוּ בְּנֵי עַבּוֹן מִפְּנֵי בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל :
