October 7th.

LORD, thou wilt ordain peace for us for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.-ISAIAH Xxvi. 12.

"No more shall nation against nation rise,
Nor ardent warriors meet with hateful eyes,
Nor field with gleaming steel be covered o'er-
The brazen trumpet kindle rage no more;
But useless lances into scythes shall bend,
And the broad falchion in a ploughshare end.'

October 8th.

Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.-JOHN xviii. 36.

October 9th.

They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us.-MICAH iii. 10, 11.

"JERUSALEM my happy home!
Name ever dear to me!
When shall my labours have an end,
In joy, and peace, and thee!
When shall these eyes thy heaven-built walls
And pearly gates behold,

Thy bulwarks with salvation strong,
And streets of shining gold !"

October 10th.

Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it; except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.PSAL. CXXVii. 1.

And the servant of the Lord must not strive: but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves.-2 TIM. ii. 24, 25.

And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. -MARK X. 44, 45.

"When I read the contradiction
Christ endured my soul to gain,
Gaze upon the crucifixion,

Shall I of the cross complain?
Let not, Lord, thy sore affliction

Have been borne for me in vain !"

October 14th.

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?-MATT. xvi. 25, 26.

October 15th.

Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, until seventy times .-MATT. xviii. 21, 22..

October 16th.

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation but be of good cheer; I,have overcome the world.-JOHN xvi. 33.
