ALTHOUGH, in preparing this new "GUIDE TO GERMAN CONVERSATION," we have consulted such authorities as Otto, Witcomb-Steuer, Flaxmann, Ragonot-Lebahn, Bădeker, Smith-Adler-Mesnard, Busch, and others, we have not been able to use any single work as a basis for this book. The principal reason was, that, with the exception of Lebahn, whose work merely consists of a Vocabulary, and Busch, whose method did not seem practicable, all these manuals were originally intended for the use either of the French or the German student; yet each of them offered so much of excellent material, that nothing was needed, in order to make a useful manual for the American student, but a discriminating selection, some revision of errors and awkward expressions (especially in the German part of Witcomb), and a new arrangement. We are especially indebted to Witcomb for the introductory part, viz., Haben (to have), and Sein (to be), conjugated with nouns and adjectives; to Lebahn and Bädeker for the Vocabulary; to Otto, Flaxmann and Witcomb for Familiar Phrases and Dialogues; to Flaxmann and Busch for Idiomatic Expressions; to Bädeker for his Questions for Travellers, generally so worded that they can be answered by "yes" or "no;" and to Bohn and others for the Proverbs.
