flatter ourselves that ours will be an exception to the rule. But we are conscious of having done our best in this respect, having been guided throughout by the twofold principle of giving the student a general idea of the whole realm of French literature, and providing such reading as may materially assist him in his endeavour to master the language.

We take this opportunity of thanking those gentlemen, both publishers and authors, through whose liberality we have been enabled to reprint in our pages extracts from such French works as are still copyright, without which our manual could have had no claim to completeness.
