THE PHILOLOGY OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE. BY A. L. MEISSNER, PH.D.,

Professor of Modern Languages in the Queen's University in Ireland.

New and cheaper edition of the Author's Palæstra Gallica. With an Appendix of Specimens of Old French, from the 9th to the 15th Century, and a set of Examination Questions.

1 vol., small 8vo. cloth. Price 38.

"On ne peut que donner des éloges à la manière dont l'auteur a compris et exécuté son travail."-GASTON PARIS, Revue Critique.

"Nous voyons avec satisfaction l'Histoire et la Grammaire scientifique de notre langue désormais représentées dans la littérature scolaire de l'Angleterre par ce recommendable manuel."-H. GAIDOZ, Revue de l'Instruction Publique.

"The Professor of Modern Languages in the Queen's University presents in this textbook the groundwork of his lectures in Queen's College, Belfast; and a good solid foundation it is, on which both lecturers and students may build with safety. Of course it is not, nor is it intended to be, light reading. The author's object is not to exhibit the results of modern philology in an attractive form for popular readers, but rather to supply materials of thought and suggestive hints to those who wish to acquire a philological knowledge of the French language in its successive stages.... Beginning with a brief but excellent account of the origin of modern French-including an accurate survey of the several characteristic distinctions between the Romance languages and the parent Latin, and a description of the three dialects of the Langue d'Oil-he proceeds to set forth under the head of "Phonology" the various changes of letters which have taken place in passing from one period to another. The remainder of the work is devoted to Morphology," or an account of the formation of words by the modification or addition of syllables or the composition of words. The forms assumed by verbs at different periods of the language are clearly and fully set forth. By way of illustration the etymology of many words is explained-of some more than once, because they happen to be instances of more than one general principle-which is no bad thing, and is far better than giving derivations in an isolated way without pointing out the law to which they conform."-Athenæum.

"A well-written and thoughtful treatise on the history and philology of the French language, scholarly in its tone and treatment, and full of valuable information on many of the most interesting points of comparative grammar. Though primarily intended for advanced students following a course of college lectures or preparing for some of the higher competitive examinations, it may be used with great advantage in the upper forms of our public schools."-Educational Times.

"This book supplies a want which has long been felt. The French language is at present learned too much as a mere matter of rote, and the pupil knows nothing of the formation and history of the language. Dr. Meissner's work supplies this information in a satisfactory manner. It is scholarly, accurate, and thorough. It is a work which ought to be used in all schools where Latin is taught, and it will be read with much interest and much profit alike by those who teach French and those who teach Latin The book has only to be known to come into extensive use.”—Museum.

OUTLINES OF FRENCH LITERATURE
Leading Facts and Typical Characters.

A SHORT GUIDE TO FRENCH LITERATURE.
With Two Chronological Tables, an Index, &c.
Cloth, price 1s. 6d.

The Outlines are intended to meet the wants of two classes of Students namely, those who have not yet formed an intimate acquaintance with French Literature, and those who, in view of an Examination, wish to take a brief survey of the ground over which they have travelled.

Beginners will have their attention arrested by those authors and literary events with which everyone should be familiar, whilst the table of suggested readings, at the end of the volume, contains a list of the typical masterpieces best calculated to serve as a foundation for more extended studies.

"Mr. Gustave Masson's Outlines of French Literature' contains a great amount of information in very small space. His book is trustworthy, and is capable of being very useful as an introduction to the study of French literature.-Scotsman. "Primers and résumés are now so completely the order of the day that M. Masson's 'Outlines will no doubt be welcomed as a matter of course. The present little work does not aim at anything beyond a syllabus which pupils may develop at leisure, and which can likewise be used as a memento by students who wish to take in without difficulty the leading facts and typical characters in the history of French intellectual life. The chronological table which follows the Outlines contains every date of importance, and the list of suggested readings given from the programme issued by the authority of the Minister of Public Instruction in Paris, will prove of much service to all those who, having little spare time at their disposal, want to be directed at once to the best authors and the most noteworthy productions. M. Masson's volume is, so far as we are aware, the first attempt of the kind, and its elementary character commends it specially to the notice of School Board teachers.”— School Board Chronicle.

Graduated French Readers.

THE ELEMENTARY FRENCH READER.

A collection of short interesting and instructive stories for beginners, adapted for use in Middle-Class Schools, &c., with a complete French-English Vocabulary. Edited by ELPHEGE JANAU, French Master at Blackheath Proprietary School. New Edition. Price 8d.

At the request of several leading members of the Scholastic Profession, I have undertaken to compile an Elementary French Reader, suitable, on account of its price and contents, to Middle-Class and other Schools. The matter contained in this book will afford ample scope for the teacher to exercise his pupils in conversation and elementary tr nslation, while the bold type chosen will make it more pleasant to read.

The Vocabulary gives every word in the text, the plural of nouns and adjectives (when formed otherwise than by the addition of s), and the feminine of all adjectives, thus avoiding the use of a dictionary. For purposes of reference, I have added a list of regular and irregular verbs. I trust this little volume will answer the purpose I had in view when compiling it, and meet with the approbation of Teachers.
