PREFACE.

THE

HE editor has arranged, as far as possible, the English Poems of Gray in chronological order and has illustrated them from Gray's correspondence. So much biographical detail will be found in the notes, that the account of the poet's life in the Introduction is necessarily short. If therein one or two circumstances are less briefly treated, this is because they have needed hitherto to be more exactly stated.

The editor wishes to thank Dr Aldis Wright, ViceMaster of Trinity College, Cambridge, Dr Henry Jackson, Mr J. M. Image and Mr W. C. D. Whetham, Fellows of that College, the Rev. W. C. Green, translator of the Egilssaga, Professor Villiers Stanford, Professor Dowden, and Mr W. George of Bristol, for kind assistance and information. He has also found great help in the little work on Gray in the Athenæum Press Series by Professors Phelps and Kittredge of Yale College.
