PREFACE.

THIS BOOK may, for the most part, be left to speak for itself. It aims to provide expression for every variety of healthy Christian experience, emphasizing especially the more jubilant, hopeful, and courageous graces and virtues. It represents the great Communion of Saints of all ages and nations.

Some who use the Book are likely to miss here and there a familiar Hymn. Further reflection may possibly convince them that the omitted Hymns are mostly inferior echoes and duplicates, which can well be spared. Where three or four really fine Hymns adequately embody some Christian feeling or purpose, three or four other inferior Hymns, striving to embody the same feeling or purpose, only lower the tone of worship.

The musical adaptations have been very carefully studied. Valuable assistance has been kindly rendered by Mr. Howard E. Parkhurst, organist of the Madison Square Presbyterian Church in this city, and by the Rev. James Carter, a recent graduate of the Union Theological Seminary. Great pains have been taken to retain the best of the old Tunes, while introducing the best of the new ones. The editors have taken it for granted that Choirs and Congregations are desiring, not revolution, but only improvement, in their Service of Song.

New York: May 1, 1885.
