footsteps, men hope to find it in pleasure, or in wine, or in riches, or in other transitory gratifications; and disappointment is the result. "Vanity and vexation of spirit" reprove the futility of their unwearied seekings; but Consolation, imparting that peace which the world fails to give, is not theirs.

Yet the reality of Consolation is of no difficult attainment; it is not restricted to the cloister, or to the study of the theologian, wherever the word of God is circulated (and there are sure indications that the day of universal spiritual illumination is not far distant, when a Bible will be seen in every British homestead), there is Consolation; and Consolation, too, not of uncertain stay, neither based on the fallible resources of humanity, for we have the happy assurance of its heavenly character from "God, even our father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting Consolation and good hope through grace."

The sacred source which we have consulted is affluent in those Consolations which, succumbing to no earthly power, lighten the toils of mortal pilgrimage, and pass not away. May they, while they enforce conviction, fill many a sorrowing heart with joy!

It is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.-Matt. xviii. 4, 5, 10, 14.

Christ

hrist (the righteousness of) neutralises the effect of the curse entailed by dam.

As by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.

That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.-Rom. v. 18, 19, 20, 21.
