PREFACE.

My object in publishing this work is to prepare Students more practically for the different Examinations, and also to give them a more permanent knowledge.

It has often struck me that, when Students are intended to present themselves for Examinations in which they offer French as one of their subjects, it would be more natural and above all more useful for them to prepare their home work on the system followed in those Examinations, and so avoiding the extra pressure always needed when the time to be examined arrives.

For this purpose I have drawn up a number of papers, divided into four parts, arranged progressively and calculated to accustom them, not only to render English into French and vice versa, but also to train them in the way of grammatically reasoning out the pieces which they may happen to translate, and of acquainting themselves with the idioms contained therein.

As it is impossible in such selections to meet with every question of grammar, I have given, at the end of Part II., a "General Questionnaire on Accidence," and likewise on “Syntax” at the end of Part IV. To those I have also added a Short Questionnaire on Brachet's Historical Grammar," as it may also be a help to Students.

The “ Selections from Authorsat the end will, I trust, be found useful both as a Reader, and as additional material for translation.

I have avoided Notes, which the pupils write down, as a rule, carelessly, without having any regard for the way in which they are to be adapted to what precedes and what follows ; the master's correction of a faulty passage is, I am convinced, more efficient.
