PREFACE.

THE following Poems are submitted to the public, in the fondly cherished hope that they will not be entirely unappreciated. Though one cannot expect for them that cordial reception which endeared re lationship might prompt, yet it is pleasing to reflect that true poetic feeling finds a response in every kindred breast. In claiming for many of the fol lowing pieces the above characteristic, viz., true poetic feeling, we trust that our judgment is not biased by filial attachment alone, since no less a judge than the late JAMES MONTGOMERY, recommended their publication above thirty years ago. Since that time many pieces have been added, which, we trust, will increase the interest in the Work.

As a memento of departed worth-as being not only highly moral but truly evangelical-the volume is recommended to the candour of the reader, in the pleasing hope that its perusal will be truly beneficial. G. H. MOSS.

Hebden Bridge, April, 1862.
