PRÉFACE.

JE remplis aujourd'hui une promesse faite il y a presque trois ans. Dans ma brochure Introduction to the Teaching of Living Languages, je disais :

66 The best book to use in schools is the volume of Fables of La Fontaine. These fables furnish to the teacher an inexhaustible source of conversation on all subjects, and are clothed in the most delightful of poetry. It is unpardonable to employ any other book in teaching, if one has not at the same time La Fontaine. I refer my reader to the two chapters on La Fontaine in Causeries avec mes Élèves, and also to the nine or ten Fables which are studied there. He will see what is the value of La Fontaine, and how he must be understood and presented to the pupils, making the fable examined prolific by the calling up of numerous thoughts which these fables inspire.

"To aid my colleagues, I shall publish next year a course on La Fontaine. The volume will comprise about fifty fables, studied as are those which are in the Causeries."

Cependant le La Fontaine que je publie aujourd'hui n'est pas l'exécution de mon plan primitif, c'est-à-dire une étude littéraire des fables. Après réflexion, il m'a semblé que les Causeries suffisaient pour guider les professeurs dans cette partie importante de leur enseignement.
