For the uncommon patronage which the American people have invariably extended to this Grammar, the author cannot but feel grateful. That he might in a measure correspond to this distinguished mark of their favour, he has endeavoured to make, at each successive edition of his work, as many corrections and improvements, as experience and a better acquaintance with the comparative genius and grammar of the English and Spanish languages, would enable him advantageously to introduce. It is fondly anticipated, therefore, that a comparison of the sixth edition of this grammar, with the former ones, will show that the unremitted attempts of the author at improvement have not been altogether unsuccessful.

THE FIFTH EDITION.

SINCE the year 1829, the author has been constantly engaged in teaching Spanish grammar and composition, among his countrymen; during which time he has never lost an opportunity of making the corrections and improvements in this grammar, which experience, or a more correct knowledge of his own language, has suggested. It has also happened, that, in the course of these seven years, distinguished native Spaniards have devoted their attention exclusively to the study and improvement of the grammar of their own language. The consequence of this has been the publication of some of the most valuable works on it we possess. To this circumstance the author is greatly, and sometimes, exclusively, indebted for some important corrections or improvements in this work.

A change in the typographical arrangement of the book; a more concise style in some of its parts which required it to make the ideas more clear; and the suppression of some matter which might be considered foreign to the grammar or unnecessary, have enabled the author to reduce
