I T is well known to feamen and philofophers, that after the numerous improvements produced by the extenfive commerce of the later ages, the great defect in the art of failing is ignorance of longitude, or of the distance to which the fhip has paffed eastward or westward, from any given meridian. That navigation might be at length fet free from this uncertainty, the legislative power of this kingdom incited the industry of searchers into nature, by a large reward proposed to him who should show a practicable method of finding the longitude at fea; and proportionable recompences to thofe, who, though they fhould not fully attain this great end, might yet make fuch advances and difcoveries as fhould facilitate the work to thofe that might fucceed them. By the fplendor of this golden encouragement many eyes were dazzled, which nature never intended to pry E S POSIZION E. Per ifgombrare questa incertezza dalla navigazione, la legiflatura di quefto regno ha ftimolata l' industria degli fcrutinatori della natura con un' ampia ricompenfa propofta a chiunque moftrerà uno eseguibile metodo di trovare la longitudine in mare; e proporzionati premi anche a coloro, che non ifcoprendola pienamente, faranno però tali avvanzamenti da facilitarne l'intera fcoperta a' loro fucceffori.
