All grammars might be similarly connected by the common laws of language. They would be as one thread to guide the learner through the several idioms, and the series would form a most convenient comparative grammar. Although written in french, this London edition of the present work is intended for the use of the English. French grammars in english, voluminous books with but too copious exercises, are not used by the abler teachers. It is on the literature and history of France that they exercise their pupils who thus acquire other things besides words. A judicious selection from the best writers is the true First french book. The forms of words, mainly of the vert, is all that the student wants at first. When able to read french, he will learn the grammar with less than half the trouble, and more than twice the profit. INTRODUCTION, La parole est l'attribut de l'homme, l'interprète de cette âme intelligente dont l'a doué son créateur; c'est par elle qu'il manifeste ses sentiments et ses pensées, et les communique à son semblable. Cette manifestation de l'esprit par la parole constitue le langage: en d'autres termes, le langage est l'expression de la pensée à l'aide de mots, signes audibles de nos idées. En outre, pour transmettre sa pensée aux absents, pour la léguer aux générations futures par un intermédiaire plus fidèle que l'incertaine tradition, l'homme a inventé une sorte de second langage, l'écriture, qui représente les mots par les lettres, signes visibles des sons et des articulations de la voix dont les mots sont composés.
