A COMPLETE COURSE

OF THE

FRENCH LANGUAGE.

By P. F. MERLET,

LATE PROFESSOR OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE IN UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, LONDON.

LATEST EDITIONS, THOROUGHLY REVISED.

I.

A FRENCH GRAMMAR, in Three Parts: PRONUNCIA TION, ACCIDENCE, and SYNTAX. Revised by A. E. RAGON, Professor of the French Language at the City of London College and at the Birkbeck Institution. Price 58. 6d.

"All the rules we find arranged in this Grammar with the utmost simplicity and perspicuity, none occupying more than two lines, and arranged in so convenient a manner as to render references very easy. At the same time every rule is illustrated by a number of plain practical sentences, such as are wanted in the common intercourse of life, and are made familiar by exercise of a similar kind. The Tables of Declensions and Conjugations are also admirably clear. It is almost impossible to represent sound to the eye; yet the rules of pronunciation laid down in this book are so systematic and precise as to render them a great help to those who have had some oral instruction."- Monthly Review,

TO BE HAD ALSO IN TWO PARTS.

THE ACCIDENCE AND PRONUNCIATION OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE. Revised by A. E. RAGON, Professor of the French Language at the City of London College and at the Birkbeck Institution. Price 38. 6d.

THE SYNTAX OF THE FRENCH GRAMMAR. Revised by A. E. RAGON, Professor of the French Language at the City of London College, and at the Birkbeck Institution. Price 38. 6d.

EXERCISES

CONTAINED IN

MERLET'S FRENCH GRAMMAR. Price 38. 6d.

This Key is intended for those who are desirous of obtaining some knowledge of the French Grammar without the immediate assistance of a Master; and more especially for those who, being already acquainted with the general theory of Grammar, prefer, for the sake of reserving the whole time of the lesson for reading and conversing, to correct their Exercises themselves. It is owing to the frequent applications made by this latter class of scholars, that the Author was induced to publish this Translation of his Exercises; which has been done as literally as the difference between the phraseologies of the two languages would permit.

On a Plan calculated to render Reading and Translation peculiarly serviceable in acquiring the Speaking and Writing of the French Language; accompanied by Explanatory Notes, a Selection of Idioms, and concise Tables of the Parts of Speech and Verbs. Price 58. 6d.

"A judicious, instructive, and entertaining selection, free from every immoral or irreligious thought or expression which the French language contains."— Literary Panorama.

SYNOPSIS OF FRENCH GRAMMAR, with References to MERLET'S FRENCH GRAMMAR. Price 28. 6d.

In arranging this SYNOPSIS OF THE FRENCH GRAMMAR, the Compiler's object was to render it useful to three descriptions of persons. First, to those who, having already gone through his or any other larger work, in this branch of the language, may yet occasionally require their memory to be refreshed by reference to a rule, or their doubts removed by the authority of an example; secondly, to learners, who, being less advanced, will find it a kind of vade mecum, as it contains a clear and concise recapitulation of the numerous but somewhat scattered rules which it is indispensably necessary they should make themselves masters of; and lastly, to the principals of acadeu ies, who, by employing it in the classes, as a catechism or examination book, will more effectually concentrate the attention of both master and pupil upon the most essential parts of French Grammar.
