DUGDALE'S

MONASTICON ANGLICANUM.

EDITED BY

JOHN CALEY, ESQ.

KEEPER OF THE RECORDS IN THE AUGMENTATION OFFICE;

HENRY ELLIS, ESQ.

KEEPER OF THE MANUSCRIPTS IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM ;

AND THE

REV. B. BANDINEL, M. A.
KEEPER OF THE BODLEIAN LIBRARY, OXFORD.

THE present republication of this great Work contains the whole of the former Edition, together with a vast accession of new Matter in the number of Charters, &c. now first printed from Leiger-Books, Rolls, and other documents preserved in different Public Libraries, and in the Repositories of the Archives of the Country.

In determining doubtful points as to the ancient distribution of property, and in tracing landed possessions from their earliest Proprietors, the MONASTICON has long been acknowledged as one of the highest authorities, and it has accordingly found a place in every considerable Law Library. The ample information which DUGDALE'S COLLECTIONS afford respecting our Religious Houses, and the great number of authentic Charters which they have preserved to us, and which, in instances through loss or destruction of the originals have been received, and admitted as evidence, in Courts of Law, have ever rendered the MONASTICON one of the most valuable and curious Works connected with English Jurisprudence and the Ecclesias tical History of the Country.

The Fifteenth Part of this Work is ready for delivery. Price 27. 12s. 6d. per Part, small Paper, and 51. 5s. large Paper.

In the course of the Publication of this Work, Engravings will be given upon a large scale of all our Cathedrals, and the most important Abbeys, Monasteries, and Religious Houses of the Country.

DUGDALE'S ST. PAUL'S.

THE HISTORY OF ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL: with a Continuation and Additions, including the Republication of Sir WILLIAM DUGDALE'S LIFE from his own Manuscripts. By HENRY ELLIS, Esq. F.R.S. Sec.S.A.

In the present Edition of Sir William Dugdale's History of St. Paul's Cathedral, his own Continuation, as far as he had himself prepared it, has been preserved, accompanied by marginal Notes and Illustrations. In the further Continuation of the History, the best and most authentic sources of information have been resorted to, complete Lists of the Dignitaries of the Church have been added, and the Appendix of Instruments greatly enlarged. The Ceremonials at, and Processions to, St. Paul's, will also be found an interesting appendage.

The rare Portrait of DUGDALE, and the whole of HOLLAR'S Plates to the former Editions, shewing the ancient state of the Cathedral, with its Monuments and Brasses, have been re-engraved with care and fidelity for the present Work, and a Vignette has been added to their number, representing the Church in flames in 1666, from a scarce print by the same Artist.

The Plates which, in addition to those abovementioned, are now for the first time offered to public attention, consist of an elevation of the West Front of Sir Christopher Wren's design, shewing considerable variations from the present structure, and another of an unexecuted design; both engraved from his original Drawings, preserved in All Souls' College, Oxford. Large exterior and internal Views of the Edifice, and a Ground Plan from actual admeasurements, are also given, with Views of the Sarcophagus in which the body of Lord Nelson is enclosed, in the Crypt, under the Cathedral, and the Monument of Sir Christopher Wren, which until now has remained unnoticed. The whole of the New Monuments which have been erected at the national expense have been engraved with exact fidelity from the marbles themselves, and present an important feature in the Illustration of our Metropolitan Cathedral.

The Price of the few remaining Copies of this Work, complete, in Six Parts, containing 67 Plates, being 21 more than are comprised in the former Editions, is 157. 15s. the small paper, and 317. 10s. the large.

PORTRAITS

OF

ILLUSTRIOUS PERSONAGES OF GREAT BRITAIN:

WITH

Biographical and Historical Memoirs of their Lives and

Actions.

BY EDMUND LODGE, ESQ.

LANCASTER HERALD, F.S. A.

THE Work consists of a Series of Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain, from the earliest periods to which authentic Pictures can be traced to about the year 1700, accompanied with Biographical Memoirs of their Lives and Actions. Every Portrait is engraved with the best skill of the English School from a Picture of undoubted authenticity, generally in the possession of the Descendant of the Person represented; an advantage which no similar work has ever fully possessed. The Portraits of Illustrious Characters are in general preserved in the Galleries of the Great, or in the National Collections of the country; these, therefore, form the sources of highest authenticity as well as of the most exquisite art; and the Proprietors beg leave to acknowledge, with the utmost gratitude, the condescension with which their solicitations for permission to make Drawings from the most valuable Pictures have been received, and the readiness with which the use of them has been granted by the possessors of the most distinguished Collections of the country.

Plan of Publication:-The Work will consist of twenty Parts, forming two Volumes in folio, printed in the finest manner. Each Part contains six Portraits, with Biographical Memoirs attached, published quarterly. It is printed in two sizes, both in folio, on a demy paper, and on drawing paper of super royal size, the latter containing Proof Impressions of all the Plates struck off upon Indian paper. The price is Two Guineas and a Half each Part for the small Edition; and Five Guineas for the large paper Copies.

ATHENE OXONI

ATHENE OXONIENSES. The History Writers and Bishops who have had their Education in the University of Oxford, from the Year 1500. To which is added, FASTI OXONIENSES; or, the Annals of the said University. First written by ANTHONY A WOOD, M.A. of Merton College; and now very considerably augmented in Text and Notes, by the Rev. PHILIP BLISS, Fellow of St. John's College, Oxford.

In the present republication of this valuable body of English Biography, every word of the two former Editions has been retained with exact fidelity, so that the curious Reader is no longer subject to the troublesome necessity of collating the Book, as first published by the Author, with the Edition given to the world by Bp. Tanner.-Besides the Text of the two former Editions, that now offered to the Public contains a vast number of Notes by Bishops Humphreys, Kennet, and Tanner, by Sir Philip Sydenham, Dr. Rawlinson, Mr. Baker, Grey, Loveday, Macro, Morant, Peck, Wanley, Whalley, and Watts, with several by the present Editor, and many of great value, which have been communicated by intelligent persons now living: add to which, each Volume contains some new Lives of Persons whose connexion with the University had escaped the industrious inquiries of the Oxford Biographer.

This Work is comprised in four large and very closely printed Volumes, royal Quarto, in double columns, including Indexes, Fasti Oxonienses, &c. price 15l. 4s. 6d. The Volumes are sold separately, the fourth being now on the eve of completion. It is then proposed to continue the Lives and Annals to the Year 1800, adopting a plan similar to that pursued by the first Author. For this purpose very copious materials are already collected; and it is earnestly requested that such Gentlemen as possess any curious and authentic Documents relative to the Oxford Writers, will have the kindness to communicate them to the Editor, who will, on his part, spare no exertions to render the Work as perfect and interesting as possible.
