From Isaac.

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. -Gen. xvii. 19.

I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;-Gen. xxvi. 3,

4.

That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ:

Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.-Gal. iii. 14, 16.

From Jacob.

the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Abraham begat Isaac, and Isaac begat Jacob. -Matt. i. 2.

From Judah.

The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.-Gen. xlix. 10.

Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:

But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.-Ps. lxxviii. 67, 68.

It is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.--Heb. vii. 14.

From Jesse.

And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out

of his roots.-Is. xi. 1.

Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.-Rom. xv. 12.

From David.

I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,

Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.

Also I will make him my first-born, higher than the kings of the earth.-Ps. lxxxix. 3, 4, 27.

The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.-Ps. cxxxii. 11.

Behold, the days come saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch.-Jer. xxiii. 5.

David, therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne.-Acts ii. 29, 30.

I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

Of this man's seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus. -Acts xiii. 22, 23.

And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David.-Lu. i. 69.

Hath not the Scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? John vii. 42.

IX.

OFFICES OF CHRIST.

Prophet.

The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken.-Deut. xviii. 15.

I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.-Deut xviii. 18, 19.

And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:

For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.-Acts. iii 20, 22.

And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.-Matt. xxi. 11.

Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.-Joh. vi. 14.

Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:-Lu. xxiv. 19.

Priest.

The LORD hath sworn,

Called of God an high

and will not repent, thou priest after the order of art a priest for ever after Melchisedec.-Heb. v. the order of Melchizedek. -Ps. cx. 4.

Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is the BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne, and he shall be a priest upon his throne.-Zech. vi. 12, 13.

Read Hebrews viii. ix.

We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens.-Heb. viii. 1.

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.-Heb. iv. 14, 15.

King.

A King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall
