PREFACE.

THE time allowed for studying the French language in schools is usually so limited, that pupils can scarcely run over a grammar of such a size as those used in many schools. Besides, an experience of many years has satisfied me that these voluminous books, good as they may be, often dishearten young people by the superabundance of their contents.

My object, therefore, in publishing this concise grammar, is to shorten and facilitate the labours of persons studying the French language, by presenting them with a clear and methodical book.

The plan adopted by Noël et Chapsal, whose grammar holds the first rank, has been pursued in the compilation of this little work, to which is appended a series of Exercises (with foot-notes) upon the ten parts of speech and all the rules of syntax, to serve as an introduction to the Guide to French Translation.
