FOURTH CONJUGATION IN RE, REGULAR.

The conjugation in re comprises about 250 verbs, simple or compound, of which 55 belong to the regular conjugation.

All the verbs of this conjugation belong to the dead or ancient conjugation.

They are conjugated on the same principle as the verbs of other conjugations in dropping the final e mute of the Infinitive to form the Future and the Conditional by adding ai, ais, as in verbs ending by a consonant.

There is a great similarity between verbs of the ancient or dead conjugation re, oir, and is not inchoative.

They are similar by the termination in many of their tenses.

The only difference between some verbs of the conjugations re and oir is in the Infinitive.

The differences shown by those two conjugations are chiefly in the stem. This is the reason why some grammarians make hardly any difference between the conjugations re and oir, saying that there are but three conjugations, of which Brachet has given, in his grammar, a table corresponding to the Latin conjugations.

The conjugation in re, being obliged to borrow its terminations from the 3d and 2d, was the first to disappear, and it has now really no other tenses but the Infinitive belonging to it.

Notice the absolute similarity of the

Past Definite and Past Imperfect Subjunctive

in the 4th and 2d conjugations.

See Part I., § 17, table of the terminations of the four conjugations.
