Bénit is said of things or of persons consecrated by a clergyman with the ceremonies of the church.

Béni is used when referring to blessing given by God or men.

Enfant béni par son père,

Cette reine est bénie par ses sujets,

A child blessed by his father.

This queen is blessed by her subjects.

This verb keeps the diaresis over i̇ in all tenses and persons except in the three persons singular of the Present Indicative, and in the 2d person singular of the Imperative.

Florissait is always used with reference to a person or to a collection of

persons.

Ronsard florissait au seizième siècle, Ronsard flourished in the sixteenth century.
Athènes florissait sous Périclès,
Athens flourished under Pericles.

However, good authors have taken no notice of this rule, which seems to be arbitrary, since it is an attempt to use the double form that this verb has only by accident.

with avoir to express an action,
with être to express a state.

Always use avoir when fleurir means to be prosperous.

THIRD CONJUGATION IN OIR REGULAR.

The 3d conjugation comprises about 30 verbs, simple and compound. Eight only are regular, and they are those ending in the Infinitive by evoir. All verbs of the 3d conjugation, regular and irregular, belong to the dead or ancient conjugation.

They are conjugated on the same principle as the verbs of the 1st and 2d

conjugations.

Notice, however, the disappearance of the diphthong oi

and its reappearance

in the Future,

in the Conditional,

in the 3d person plural of the Present Indicative,

in the three persons of the singular Present Subjunctive,
in the 3d person plural Present Subjunctive.

There are only those eight verbs in that regular conjugation, and the obsolete one Ramentevoir.

In the Infinitive, the Present Participle, and in the derivative tenses of these primitive tenses, there is a stem different from the stem of three other primitive tenses, which have a syllable less.

A cedilla is put under the c when it is followed by the diphthong of or by the Vowel u.

There is no verb in this conjugation having a circumflex accent over one of the vowels of the stem.
