November 8th.

November 7th.

LOVE only does our soules refine,

And by his skill

Turns humane things into divine,
And guides our will.

Then let us of his praises sing:
Of love that sweetens everything.

THERE is a silence when the voice is loud-
There is a sadness when the heart is high;
An inner solitude amidst the crowd;

A smile that veils the sigh.

November 8th.

LIFE, believe, is not a dream
So dark as sages say;

Oft a little morning rain

Foretells a pleasant day,

Sometimes there are clouds of gloom,

But these are transient all;

If the shower will make the roses bloom,
O, why lament its fall?

Rapidly, merrily,

Life's sunny hours flit by;

Gratefully, cheerily,

Enjoy them as they fly!

November 9th.

MAY the bloom of the earth be upon thee, and the hope of the heaven above,
May the blessings of days be upon thee, and the full extent of love!
May'st thou see our children's children, and the crowned kin of kings!
May no hope from thine eyes be hidden of the day of better things!
May the fire ne'er stay thy glory, nor the ocean-flood thy fame!
Through ages of all ages may the wide world praise thy name!

O, SIR! the angels wait and watch your purpose:
Unwritten history pauses for your deed,

To set your name within a shining annal.

November 10th.

So now in patience I possess
My soul year after tedious year,
Content to take the lowest place,

The place assigned me here.

Yet sometimes when I feel my strength
Most weak and life most burdensome,

I lift mine eyes up to the hills
From whence my help shall come.

Christina Rossetti

DELIVERY makes the orator's success,

In that I'm far behind, I must confess,

Theodore Martin.

November 11th.

I WILL forget her! all dear recollections.
Pressed in my heart, like flowers within a book,
Shall be torn out, and scattered to the winds!
I will forget her! But perhaps hereafter,
When she shall learn how heartless is the world,
A voice within her will repeat my name,
And she will say, "He was indeed my friend!"

THE quiet happy face that lighted up
As from a sunshine in the heart within,
Rejoicing whomsoever looked on it,
But far more whomsoever it looked on.

Long fellow.

Mrs. Hamilton King.

November 12th,

INSTINCTIVE wisdom, humour swift and gay,
A simple greatness, sure to do and say
The best, belong to her, and in her voice
A tone to make the dullest heart rejoice.

IF the celestials daily fly

With messages on missions high,

What wonder hints of coming things,
Whereto man's hope and yearning clings,
Should drop like feathers from their wings,
And give us vague presentiments?
