PREFACE,

Ir is not usual, nor would it often be proper, for Authors and Editors to invite the Public into their council chambers; but the Editor of this little work, anxiously hesitating whether to continue or discontinue it, feels that she has only the public to whom to appeal for a decision.

In the last year's Preface it was stated, that no profit arose from the work, and that the Editor's labours were wholly gratuitous. It might then, and now must be added, that in prosecuting them she has had to sustain a heavy pecuniary loss; which prudence and justice to her family forbid her farther to incur.

She still feels, what she then expressed, "a conscientious regard for the best interests of a large class of society, for whose instruction no other monthly publication distinctly provides." This urges her to proceed. Besides, though the publication has never redeemed itself, it has continued steadily to extend its circulation, and the former volumes are in great demand, which strongly intimates its permanent acceptableness; indeed, it has not only received expressions of general approbation from its readers, but very strong and flattering
